TAMBELLUP PRIMARY SCHOOL

Tambellup is a Level 4 Primary School in the Albany Education District, located
330 km's from Perth on the Gt Southern Highway.

We are situated within the Tambellup townsite which has a population of approximately 280 serving the town and community through a variety of small businesses. A further 400 people live in the surrounding area. Farming is the main industry with the principal activities being cropping, sheep and intensive piggeries. The farming community is supported by agricultural businesses such as Transport Companies, Fertiliser Suppliers, Seed Cleaning and CBH.

The school draws its students from the Tambellup Shire, within an approximate radius of 25 km's from the school site. The school is serviced by 3 major School Bus Routes. Approximately 50% of students travel to school on one of these services. Around 33% of the school population is Aboriginal, all of whom live in town. The other 17% are town children whose parents are involved in shearing or work in local businesses.

The parent and wider community are very supportive of the school. This is evident through parent turnouts at major school events such as open days, assemblies, end of year concert, carnivals and fund raising events. The school is actively involved in many local events including the Tambellup Agricultural Show, Tidy Towns and Landcare projects. In 2005 the School came 3rd in the Albany Education Districts Schoolyard Blitz Awards. This competition implemented by DET, encouraged schools and communities to upgrade their grounds. The Tambellup community rallied magnificently and we have grounds that the whole community can be justifiably proud of.

The School Council is very keen to see the school focus on improving student outcomes in Literacy and Numeracy. It takes its job of overseeing school improvement seriously. The School Council contributes to policy development with the P & C used as a forum for discussing educational issues and supporting resource purchases. We also have a strong and hardworking P&C. The P&C have financed the School's Undercover Area and most recently installed Air Conditioning in the school.

The school has 5 full-time teaching staff, and this year has had a Deputy Principal role appointed. Our Support Staff comprise of Education Assistants working with our special needs and education support students who are integrated into the mainstream, a fulltime Aboriginal Indigenous Education Officer (AIEO) who supports our Noongar students and a Registrar. A part time Gardener and Cleaner complete our Staffing Profile. The staff works well as a team and is highly committed to the welfare of the students and the implementation of school and departmental priorities.

In 2006 the following class arrangement: K, P/1, 2/3, 4/5, 6/7 is in place. Our Support Program includes ICT, The Arts, Science and LOTE , which is Italian.
The staff have been instrumental in the development of an Oral Language Program - TOP in Language - in response to needs within the school and community. This has been recognised by the ADEO and CAGE Region as being worthy of offering to other schools as an example of 'best practice'. With the support of PCAP, PSPI and BM&D Funding the school has been able to initiate a number of programs and projects such as Homework Classes, a Mentor Program, Cultural Incursions and Excursions and Artist in Residence.

The school also supports the A Smart Start Program which is a community partnership between the Health Department, Education Department and Local Shires. This program is particularly well supported in the Central Great Southern Region. A Smart Start is aimed at supporting families with young children 0 - 4 by the provision of information and access to 'professionals'to make these very important formative years easier.

There is a positive interaction with other schools in our district for various sports carnivals and tabloid days. These schools are: Cranbrook, Kendenup, Frankland and St, Bernard's Catholic School (Kojonup). We combine with Cranbrook for the annual Yr 6/7 Camp. This has enabled our schools to enjoy Rottnest one year, and an Adventure Camp the other year. Professional Development also features regularly with these school's staff.

The school, which commenced in 1905 and was shifted to our present site in 1948, has 5 linear classrooms, a library, workroom, staff room and administration area. Our Pre Primary Centre is located in the eastern corner of the school site. All rooms are connected to the administration on a curriculum computer network.
There are two weatherboard classrooms 30 metres east of the main buildings. These are from the original school site and are used for Art/Craft, Technology and Enterprise, Music and LOTE (Italian).

The P & C funded the construction of an undercover area in 1997. In 2001 a section was enclosed to make it more functional in wet weather. Further improvements are planned and a submission is currently before the Investing in Our Schools Project, to further modify our Undercover Area and render it a more effective play and instruction area.

The town of Tambellup commemorated its Centenary in 1999. The school celebrated its 100th year in 2005. The school combined with the Tambellup Agricultural Show to host a weekend of celebrations. This weekend was well supported by past students, staff and community. It was a great success. A Time Capsule, to be recovered in 2030, was buried as part of our celebrations.

Tambellup has been a very successful community over the years. Many of our former students have enjoyed successes after leaving Tambellup Primary School. Many have gone on to represent the Country and/or State in many sports - Football, Cricket, Lawn Bowls, Tennis and Shooting. In recent years 2 of our former students have achieved success in the AFL.

Tambellup Primary School is a great place to teach.
