| Welcome to Takari Primary School. Takari Primary School is situated in the suburb of Balcatta in the West Coast Education District and is set amongst sprawling sporting fields, urban bushland and shady trees. The school was established in 1968 and students attending the school are mainly from the suburb of Balcatta with some enrolments from families residing in nearby suburbs. There are currently 170 primary students in single stream classes enrolled in Years 1 to 7, and 20 kindergarten students and 27 pre primary students in pre compulsory programs. The school population is drawn from a diverse ethnic community, in particular Southern Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Once a week a number of students have access to the visiting English As A Second Language (ESL) team. This cultural diversity is clearly acknowledged and celebrated, and adds to the quality of cultural relationships and understandings in the school community. The school comprises three Primary teaching blocks comprising ten (10) air conditioned teaching areas. Each has a central wet area for art, cooking and associated activities. The school also has a music and a physical education room and two state of the art computer laboratories. The pre-compulsory classes are housed in purpose built classrooms. Takari Primary School's mission is: *to provide a quality education for all students and to develop them as life long learners. *to promote a work environment that acknowledges and values students and staff. *to celebrate the contribution of parents as partners in the educational process. The two pre compulsory classes use up-to-date resources and programs, carefully selected to maximise learning opportunities. Assessment of students, using a number of identification tools allows for early intervention strategies to be implemented, to address the needs of students at risk. The classes feature 'Interest Centres' that are allocated generous space to encourage interaction between students. The focus changes frequently in response to the developmental learning programs devised by Early Childhood Teachers supported by Education Assistants. Parent involvement is encouraged. Primary students study a full range of subjects across the eight learning areas. The exception is Languages Other Than English (LOTE, Italian), which is studied by Years 3 to 7. There is a focus on physical education and music, which have specialist teacher tuition time. Some students attend Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC) classes provided off site. From Years 5 to 7 students are developmentally grouped in mathematics, and several support teachers assist students who are talented and gifted, and at educational risk. All staff are involved in on going teaching, learning and assessment 'best practice' professional development programs, and Department of Education and Training (DET) initiative sessions. The school has a policy that requires students to wear an agreed code of dress. Significant funding has been allocated to support information communication technologies and the provision of computers in each room. Also the school's two computer laboratories boast state of the art computers where teachers are able to instruct students on large screens and data projectors. Our computers have Internet access while digital, still, and video, cameras are used extensively also. At Takari Primary School, parents and care givers are recognised as important contributors to their child's social, physical, cultural, moral and intellectual development. Their contribution includes helping with the implementation of a range of in-class programs; assisting with extra curricula activities; participating in the school decision making process via an active Parents and Citizens' Association (P&C) and School Council; supporting the ongoing development of the school resources and facilities via the P&C and attending parent information sessions and meetings. The school provides information via a fortnightly newsletter. A joint P&C and school initiative has seen the highly successful establishment of an onsite before and after school, and vacation day care facility. This facility is operated by the Cedric Street Early Learning Centre who hire a vacant classroom 5 days a week. A committed team, comprising a manager and volunteer workers, provide school lunches 3 days a week from a canteen facility connected to the undercover area. Multi purpose courts and the oval are available for student use and for hire to the general public. The school perceives the relationship with parents and care givers as being part of a team endeavouring to achieve common goals.
