| Community As our school is situated in an older more established area of Albany, our students come from a range of socio-economic backgrounds. The school receives loyal support from its parent group and as such a positive relationship exits between school staff and parents. School Facilities First opened in 1959 our school has the linear classroom design. Being an older type of school classrooms are reasonably spacious, particularly in the junior primary where renovations have been carried out to extend the size of these rooms. The asbestos roof has just recently been replaced to give the school a modem look. School facilities also include two classrooms converted for music and wet area activities, a more recently built library resource centre, a school hall used for assemblies and performing arts as well as a recently constructed fully enclosed multi-purpose undercover area. Also included on site are three purpose built transportable early childhood units, one used for kindergarten and two used for pre-primary. Our grounds are spacious and our oval has a view across to the wonderful Middleton Bay. By the end of 2006 an extensive upgrade of our administration area will be cpmpleted. Our school is fully networked with internet access available in all classrooms. Students also have access to a bank of sixteen computers. Recently the school has also installed a bank of 10 wireless linked laptops that allow internet access at most points within the school grounds. An interesting feature of our school is that it shares a campus with Spencer Park Education Support Centre. This offers excellent opportunities for the integration of students with disabilities as well as the advantage of having available expertise in assisting mainstream students with learning difficulties. With one P&C and a shared newsletter the relationship between the school and the Centre is close. Being a level 5 primary school, the Principal is assisted by two Deputy Principals. For 2006 our school receives additional support through the Getting it Right NUmeracy Program, Behaviour Management and Discipline Program and also has an Aboriginal Education Support Teacher and Learning Support Coordinator. Our staff is an experienced group with almost all teachers having in excess of 10 years experience. They cater for an enrolment that each year fluctuates between 300 and 350 students in primary, 50 students in pre-primary and 40 students in kindergarten. Programs Specialist programs are run in the areas of physical Education, music and our LOTE program offers Indonesian as a second language. The school choir is a notable feature of our school music program and is available for interested students in Years 4 to 7. Selected students also have opportunities in Year 6 and 7 to learn guitar, clarinet or a brass instrument through the Schools Instrumental Music program. A variety of programs for the talented and gifted as well as students with learning difficulties are in place to cater for the diverse range of student abilities and interests. Identified gifted students can also access the District organised Primary Extension and Challenge program. School Ethos and Climate Pastoral care is well embedded in the school culture with our school widely recognised as a 'school with heart'. Staff work hard to foster a sense of belonging where each child is valued and nurtured to support their individual development. Student support is provided by a positive whole school approach to managing behaviour, a peer mediation program and a zero tolerance approach to bullying. In 2003 the school won the Albany District's prestigious 'Aspiring to Excellence Award' as well as a 'National Literacy and Numeracy Achievement Award' for its work in producing excellent literacy learning results. In 2004 and 2006 Spencer Park was a finallist in the Premiers Reading School of the Year Award. | ||||
