| Southwell PS is a small Level 4 school located in Hamilton Hill in the Fremantle-Peel Education District. It serves a section of the Hamilton Hill community which is bordered by Rockingham, Phoenix, Stock and Forrest Roads. Southwell has the lowest Socio-Economic Index (SEI) rating in the Fremantle District. A Principal and Deputy Principal make up the Administration team. In recent years the student population has declined due to the New Living Program implemented by the Dept of Housing and Works. The school population currently has 30a0Aboriginal students with 5a0Language Background Other Than English (LBOTE) students. Over the years Southwell has received additional funding threough Federal and State programs because of the degree of social disadvantage. The school currently receives significant funding through the Commonwealth Literacy and Numeracy Program (CLNP). Other funding is also provided through Behaviour Management And Discipline (BMAD), Indigenous Education Strategic Iinitiatives Program (IESIP), Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS) and Parent School Partnerships Initiative (PSPI). This enables the school to provide a strong pastoral care program and additional support to targeted students in Literacy and Numeracy. Additional staffing allocations through Aboriginal Education Specialist Teacher (AEST) and Getting It Right - Literacy (GiRL) also enable a strong support program to be provided for students. A very strong commitment by staff, supportive parents and an effective behaviour management program ensure that positive learning climate prevails. The structure of the School Development Planning Process enables many staff to take on leadership roles in the planning, monitoring and development of strategies. The school has a purpose built Art room and Drama room with a withdrawal room being used for Music. The school has had a Drama specialist for several years. Italian was introduced in the school in 1998 and this continues to be the LOTE within the school. The school has established strong links to the community through the PSPI program and a variety of organizations including the City of Cockburn, Department of Community Development, Strong Families, Burdiya Aboriginal Youth Services and Cockburn Youth Services. | ||||
