| South Thornlie Primary was opened in 1976. It was built as an open plan school with an on site double unit pre-primary centre. The school buildings consist of three clusters, each containing six teaching areas, two practical areas and a withdrawal area. One cluster has since been converted to five teaching areas and an art / craft room. All the classrooms, including the pre primary, library, office and staff room have been air-conditioned by the School's P and C Association through fund raising. In addition to the seventeen permanent teaching areas one demountable classroom is being used for music. There are also two purpose built Pre primary units to house our Kindy students. A well-equipped computer laboratory has been established. All classes from Year 1 to Year 7 are timetabled for weekly Computer Education lessons, in addition to the computers in the classroom. The specialist areas in the school now consist of Art/craft, Music and Physical Education. We also have a Languages other than English program, delivering Italian to children in Years 2 to 7. A Music Program operates in our school for Years 1-7students. Our Junior and Senior choirs regularly sing at Festivals and entertain senior citizens. Our school also provides tuition for year 6 and 7 students in flute and guitar. Our Physical Education program is very comprehensive and provides for all children in years 1-7. We have our own Swimming Carnival, Cross Country Championships, Jumps Carnival (involving children from years 1-7) and Athletics Carnival. The children are also involved in Winter Sports(Years 6-7), Interschool and State Cross Country and Interschool Athletics. All classes do daily fitness and play modified games organized by the Physical Education teacher. An Art/Craft program is provided for children in Years 1-7. The Art/Craft Specialist also organizes Special Art classes for our talented students. There is always an Art Exhibition at the end of the year to celebrate the art talent in our school. We provide for remediation and extension in our school for years pre primary to year 7. Some of our parents are trained to tutor children in reading. Tutors work individually with the student to assist in the development of their reading skills. The school is developing a new Managing Student Behaviour Policy with the help of parents and staff. Our Values Program, where a new value is introduced each month and is emphasized in our Friendship Groups, (these groups include children from Pre Primary to Year 7) is showing great success. | ||||
