South Merredin Primary School is located on the south side of the Merredin town site. It is walking distance to the Merredin Senior High School and is easily accessed by town's people who are not required to cross major highways.
The school incorporates 10 classrooms, an onsite kindergarten centre, an onsite pre-primary centre, library, computer room, music room, undercover assembly area, playground facility at the front of school, large limestone bordered undercover playground inside the school quadrangle incorporating a large sandpit with 2 diggers. There is a newly refurbished front entrance with flagpole area leading into the school and this is also the entry for the main office.
The school has a large quadrangle for sports such as netball and basketball and a grassed oval for football, athletics and cricket.
South Merredin has an onsite canteen which operates daily and provides morning recess and lunches to both students and staff. The canteen operates within the WA Department of Education & Training's policy and standards for healthy food and drink choices.
South Merredin Primary School is also a registered 'Crunch and Sip' school which promotes a daily fruit time as well as drinking water throughout the day. The students are encouraged to have a water bottle on hand. All students participate in a daily physical activity program at the start of each school day.
Students from Pre-Primary to Year Seven are included in a Music Program which is run by a specialist Music Teacher. There is a school choir which includes students from Year 4 to Year 7. The choir performs at local events and participates in the State Choir Eisteddfod representing the school.
Another important service provided by the school is an early years 0 - 4 pre kindy program called 'Magic Minds'. Children from 0 yrs to pre kindy year join our early childhood staff each week for a morning of structured play and age appropriate (and fun) learning activities. This programme is free.
South Merredin Primary School has a designated Physical Education teacher, a Computer Information Technology teacher, Religious Studies and Italian Teacher. We also run a Talented and Gifted Student program and cater for students with learning difficulties and physical disabilities.
Each month assemblies are held by one of the school classes and each class takes a turn during the year. Parents, relatives and the wider community are encouraged to attend. At these assemblies students are recognised for their academic, music, sporting and behaviour achievements.
Throughout the year we also run a Swimming Carnival, Cross Country Carnival and Athletics Carnival and the Winter Sports Carnival which includes hockey, netball and football. We also participate against the other schools in these events.
The School has a very strong behaviour management and discipline policy and good behaviour is recognised and rewarded. There is the same standard of behaviour management throughout the school which is applied in every class from Kindergarten through to Year 7. We also implement an anti bullying program which is runs constantly over the year.
South Merredin Primary School has a very supportive and active Parent and Citizens Association and School Council. These committees are run with school and student wellbeing in mind. The P & C has been assisting to fund upgrades around the school including the front entrance, playgrounds and recently purchased a school set of sports shirts for each student.
South Merredin has a 100% parent supported school uniform. There is a uniform shop onsite which is opened at certain hours twice a week. On Fridays all students wear their sports uniform which indicates which faction they are part of. All students must also wear their school hat to participate in outside activities.
South Merredin Primary School is a proud school that hosts great spirit and a welcoming and friendly climate. The staff is very stable and there has been very little turnover of staff over the years since establishment in the early sixties. The school places a very high priority on the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of the students this focus will remain as a centerpiece of the school's ethos in years to come.
