| South Hedland PS was the first primary school to be established in South Hedland. Student numbers are stable at 320-340 Kindergarten to Year 7 and over a number of years there has been a significant change to the ratio of the student population, which in 2006 has approximately 80% Aboriginal students. A significant number of students come from a home background where English is the second language, and a minority of students come from non-English speaking countries, in particular the Malay Muslim community. Planning for a future that will support and prepare our students is a priority of the school. Priority is given to developing Literacy, Numeracy, Values Education, Recognition of and Respect for Culture and Retention and Participation. School leadership is shared and cohesive with a strong emphasis on collaborative curriculum and professional learning. The school is enriched by teachers with youthful enthusiasm and willingness to 'have a go,' which creates a stimulating, productive learning environment. The school is strengthened by its strong collegial atmosphere and the friendships that develop between staff members and it is fortunate in having excellent Aboriginal and Indigenous Education Officers (AIEOs), Education Assistants and Special Needs Education Assistants. They are experienced and competent in assisting with teaching and learning, advise on appropriate cultural understanding and intervention, support teaching staff during parent interviews and provide pastoral care for students. In 2006 a new building for creating community links was added to the school site. Funding for this excellent facility was through a shared project supported by the Community Development Fund and the Pilbara Development Fund. Currently this building is used for Playgroup twice a week, giving young families the opportunity to establish early links with the school. In addition, it is used for an after school dance group and future plans include adult computing classes and community meetings. South Hedland Primary School faces many challenges but the reward of making a difference is highly motivating. A feature of the school has been its success in improving educational outcomes for students and for capacity building and mentoring staff. The learning program is designed to meet the needs of the students and the staff is dedicated to ensuring students reach their full potential and become responsible members of our rich and vibrant community. The school has been recognised nationally and within the state for excellence and innovation.
