| Located in the suburb of Beeliar, a relatively new suburb in the rapidly expanding the Perth metropolitan southern corridor. South Coogee Primary School is approximately 13 kms south of Fremantle and 2 kms inland from the coast. The school has rapidly increased in student enrolments over the past 3 years and was reclassified to a level 5 primary school in January 2006. It services a large area located south of Barrington St to Russell Rd and east from Stock/Rockingham Roads to Spearwood Avenue/Tindal Av. Wattleup is an optional area, since Wattleup Primary School closed in December 2005. The majority of students live in the suburb of Beeliar (Stanford Gardens), with considerable numbers also in Yangebup, Munster and Wattleup. Population within the school boundary will continue to increase as there are a number of small new housing estates and an extensive amount of undeveloped land around the school. South Coogee is a caring, child centred school with a commitment to developing values throughout the school and across the curriculum through the Virtues Project. Great importance is placed on providing for the individual needs and Pastoral Care of students. Special programs at the school include Visual Arts, music, instrumental music (clarinet, flute and guitar), learning technologies, T.A.G.S., Learning Intervention program (L.I.P.), Bluearth Physical Activity program, L.O.T.E. (Italian for years 3-7) and an excellent Peer Mediator program. The school is a Water- Wise and a 'Sun Safe' school. The school has experienced considerable success both academically and on the sporting field; winning the interschool cross country races, football, 2 netball and 2 hockey shields in 2005. We also won the Eagles Cup and came second in the state wide Norm Hyde 'Pastoral Care' awards in 2005. We enjoy an excellent reputation in the Cockburn Community in respect to the overall success and performance of its graduating students and the caring tone of the school; a factor in the high number of crossing boundary applications. There are few behaviour problems with the students and truancy or transiency have not been major issues. The school enjoys 'state of the art' modern facilities and a lovely learning environment in its 3 year old site, especially in regards to its Information Technologies Centre, classroom teaching blocks and play areas. Classrooms are spacious and designed to promote collaborative teaching and learning practices. Our Learning Technologies program has students accessing the Internet and communicating on the Intranet from all over the school site with wireless and cabled connections. There are 80 computers in classrooms, teaching block mini labs, the library and include a trolley of 20 notebook computers. The local community and parents are most supportive and are actively involved in the school and its learning programs. There is widespread parental involvement in classroom learning programs and the Learning Intervention Program classes. We enjoy tremendous attendances by parents at sports carnivals, annual concerts, fortnightly parent assemblies, open nights and excursions. Annual parent surveys convey a very high degree of satisfaction in the school's learning programs, its operation and organisation. The School Council is actively involved in all aspects of school development planning processes and the monitoring of our performance. Our decision making processes are influenced by suggestions from parent surveys, input from the P & C and student needs, as identified in our comprehensive monitoring of school and student performance. South Coogee has a supportive, experienced and competent staff and we commenced recruiting staff through a local merit selection process in 2005. There are 12 primary classes, 1 pre primary, 1 combined PP and kindergarten class and 2 kindergarten classes. The staff include a principal, a deputy principal, 19 teachers and 19 non teaching staff, including cleaners. South Coogee Primary School is 85 years old, having commenced operations in the South Coogee Agricultural Society Hall in 1921. The older wooden wing of 4 classrooms at the Russell Rd site was transported from Mandogalup. The school was re-located to a new school site in the centre of its biggest cluster of school population, at Stanford Gardens, in the suburb of Beeliar in April, 2003. | ||||
