| Established in 1934, Scarborough Primary School continues to provide an appropriate, challenging and creative curriculum for its students. The school motto 'Strive' is engendered across all years and curriculum areas. Scarborough is a well-established community on the coast some 14km north west of the CBD. Accommodation ranges from single residence dwellings to one-bedroom flats. An increasing number of two and three unit dwellings are being constructed. Parents, who come from a wide range of professions and business occupations, are unified in seeking and supporting excellence for their children. The Parents and Citizens' Association (P&C) meets twice per term to plan for and provide support for school programs. The School Council, with parent and teacher representation, meets each term to effect policy implementation, provide a parent forum to school affairs and to endorse the School Report. The school is linear in design with all classrooms opening onto an enclosed central corridor. The rooms are large, carpeted, well lit and have ceiling fans, refrigerated air conditioning and gas heating. We have had extensive re-furbishment of the building in 2006 through State funding. External grounds are supplemented by the use of Deanmore Square, a short walk (200 metres) from school. The Kindergarten centre is located off-site (200 metres to the west) in Bazaar Terrace (overlooking Deanmore Square). Four year olds attend four half-day sessions per week. After school care is available through local government and private facilities. The children are picked up from school by bus each afternoon. Our School Focus is on developing our students' Literacy and Numeracy skills but this is achieved through a cross-curricular approach which engages the students in a stimulating and positive learning environment. In 2006, we had a special focus on the Arts in semester one and on Science in semester 2. Our focus on Science is part of a two year plan. 2006-2007. The school also emphasises the use of modern technology and prides itself on its integrated use of ICT. The school was totally networked in 2006 and had a huge injection of hardware ensuring easy access to technology for the students. A comprehensive music program is offered, which contributes to the music profile and good reputation of the school. School choir, brass and recorder instruction are also available. Health and Physical Education also has a strong focus in the school as we encourage a Healthy, Active Lifestyle for all our school community. The Japanese School in Perth (JSP) is located on our site and provides numerous opportunities for cultural and sporting integration. JSP and SPS have integration on a class basis, on two occasions each term. Years 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 classes receive 1 hour per week of Japanese language instruction from a visiting teacher through the Department of Education's LOTE (Languages Other Than English) program. The school has a fully automated library with a wide range of modern print materials available to the children. Nearby Churchlands Senior High School is the preferred location for students progressing on to secondary school, although other excellent public secondary schools are available within the western suburbs. | ||||
