Verdict - quite positive rating.

Compare with all other primary schools.
Situated approximately 50kms from Esperance, Scaddan is in a mixed agricultural community. Children are drawn from surrounding farms with children travelling some distance on one of the two buses servicing the school. It is an established farming area with strong family ties. The accessibility from Esperance means that many extra curricular activities are easily accessed to broaden the children's opportunities. Many children are second generation students thus the parents have a strong interest in the progress and the development of the school. The school motto of Learning and Friendship is embedded throughout the school, from the Scaddan School Song (written by a community member) through to the section of different learning programmes.

The town-site of Scaddan was named after Mr John Scaddan, former Premier of Western Australia. The town has a focal point in an active Country Club which offers lawn bowls and an 18 hole golf course. The existing school, built in 1970, was opened in 1973, and after strong community lobbying, and was increased to three classrooms in 1984, returning to two in 1987. A lease agreement currently exists with Department of Education to use the community hall to supplement additional facilities; which at this time include whole school assemblies, concerts, music and as a Kindy/Pre Primary Centre.

Current staffing allows for two full-time teachers, a teaching administrator and an early childhood education assistant. Three days a week two classes operate (a P-3 and a 4-7) whilst on the other two days a Kindy/Pre-Primary group, a 2/3 and a 4-7 class occur. An additional Education Assistant is also employed to provide support for the Year 4-7 class. All multi-age classes encourage integration supporting strong values and cross curricular work to ensure maximum achievement of outcomes for student learning. Low early childhood numbers allow for greater focus and ensure these children have a solid foundation for their schooling.

The community has shown a strong historical involvement in the school and was part of the Local Management of Schools trial in recent years. This led to the foundation of a proactive School Council and participation in the selection process of the substantive Principal in 2003. The wider parent body has been extensively consulted in many areas including Behaviour Management and reporting to parents.

This school is classified as a difficult to staff school and, at times, retention of staff has posed some problems. The parent group and the principal are aware of this and are proactive in creating a positive and supportive atmosphere for students, staff and the wider school community.

Internet access of a consistently high standard has been difficult to obtain in the past but initiatives at a system level are addressing the quality of phone lines and speed of access which will enable the 10 computers available for classroom use to be effectively integrated into the curricular.

In 2005 the administration upgrade provided a vast operational improvement for all staff and allowed a dedicated library for the first time in many years. The LOTE or Japanese area is now located in a small area exclusively for this purpose allowing improved provision of Japanese via the centra system in 2007. This incorporates four additional computers for studnet use. In 2006 'the Workshop' or T and E Shed was added to the facilities providing a specific facility for hands on Technology and Art projects.

The support of the community and the commitment of the highly professional staff in providing innovative and effective teaching and learning programs, make Scaddan a terrific place for all children and staff.
