| Samson P.S. was officially opened in May 1987. It is located south of the Swan River at the eastern end of the Fremantle area. Adjacent to the Samson Recreation Centre, the school is an aesthetically inviting set of buildings, situated in beautifully kept grounds which feature grass trees, eucalypts, rose gardens and extensive grassed areas. Samson P.S. serves a multicultural community of blue and white collar workers as well as some academics from nearby Murdoch University. The teaching/learning program is effectively maintained by an experienced, capable staff, most of whom have attained 'Senior Teacher' status. The school is ably supported, by up to 60 parent volunteers active on a weekly basis. The social and emotional development of students is given high priority through the teaching of virtues (values). The P & C Association gives the school great support and the 13 member School Council is active and effective. Students are given many opportunities to develop their leadership qualities and to improve their academic standing. Technology is used extensively as a tool to support the teaching/learning program. The school is fully networked. Housed in the library are 16 desk top and 16 lap top computers. Four desk top computers in each of the 12 classrooms further enhance the program. Having an extremely capable I.C.T. Co-ordinator on staff has proved a real bonus, both for staff and students. Daily fitness sessions are an integral part of our P.E. /Health programme and an extensive range of sporting activities are experienced. As well as traditional sports, archery, gymnastics, flag belt rugby, cross country running and junior triathlons are offered. Hockey and lacrosse teams are entered into weekend club competitions and beach swimming lessons are enjoyed by senior students. The Arts Learning Area is gaining an enormous reputation. The opportunities offered both within our school and through numerous outside sources means students that have an interest in this area are well placed. A number of musical and dramatic performances combining music, visual arts and drama in recent years have enjoyed huge success due to the enthusiasm of gifted, enthusiastic teachers and a supportive school community. Chess and debating teams continue to operate vibrantly during the school week and our students have also enjoyed success in these endeavours. In more traditional Learning Areas Samson has always excelled. Our results stand the scrutiny of outside measurements like WALNA comparing us to similar socio-economic schools. Gaining distinctions in both Australasian Mathematics & Science Competitions are recent examples of the learning programs of which students can take advantage. Samson graduates are eagerly sought by local secondary schools, both government and private demonstrated by the numbers of scholarships offered to our graduating students. Sporting success has included winning the Interschool Athletics Carnival, winning the Eagles Cup (football), 2 state representatives in the W.A. Junior U/13 ice hockey team and 1 state representative in the girls W.A. U/12 soccer team, just in 2004. Samson Primary has developed an excellent pastoral care program that is apparent to all who become members of its community. Virtues, rights and responsibilities underpin all that happens and the result is that our behaviour management issues are rarely serious. As indicated 'Parents as Partners' is an outstanding feature and a strong contributing factor in the successes we enjoy here at Samson P.S. Throughout 2004, some 84 parents were involved in school activities. An outstanding example was our SUPPORT-A-READER programme where 35 dedicated and trained parent tutors, assisted 'at risk' student readers, each morning for 20 minutes. The programme will continued in 2005 and enhanced the self-esteem and abilities of all the students involved. Currently the school is part of a trial for 'Fast ForWord,' a software program used extensively in United States schools for retraining students who have displayed auditory processing problems. The sophisticated software enhances the fundamental learning skills of auditory memory, attention and concentration, auditory processing, sequencing, phonological awareness, reading and problem solving. Student placements into Samson P.S. are eagerly sought by parents from surrounding districts, due to its reputation as a quality school. The school uniform is worn proudly and the exemplary behaviour of its students is given constant and well deserved recognition from the community at large. | ||||
