| Salmon Gums is a small closely knit farming community which developed from 1926 onwards. The town, though small, boasts outlets such as a post office, hotel and auto mechanic garage, which along with numerous houses, is nestled amongst an outcrop of tall salmon gum trees. Sporting facilities include a golf course, tennis courts and a rifle range. The community is conservative, basically non-transient and has a small growth pattern. The community has a good representation of age groups, excepting the very elderly. Salmon Gums Primary School has hosted many talented and dedicated Principals. Support staff members are long serving and integral members of the local community, providing a stable but flexible environment for new teachers. The school staff is made up of a Principal, teachers (full time classroom and part time Japanese language), teacher assistants, library officer, registrar, cleaner and gardeners. The principal is accommodated in a three bedroom brick house built in 1996. The school has a lovely family-like atmosphere with a strong support network consisting of students, parents, staff and community members. The multi-age classes cater perfectly for developing children's strengths and improving on areas of need. The small class sizes allow for individualised instruction and programming, with students receiving an interest and needs based curriculum. The teaching and learning programmes reflect the pedagogy of the Curriculum Framework with a focus on 'Learning to Learn', thinking strategies and the promotion of independent learning. As we move through the technological age, Salmon Gums School continues to improve the resources available in this area. The current ratio is one computer for every two students. The school is extremely well resourced in all learning areas. Communication between the school, community and students is maintained through active involvement of all stakeholders. Mediums of communication include newsletters, portfolios, learning journeys, three-way conferencing and continual parent involvement in all school activities and decisions. The school is supported by an active P&C that meets each month and a School Council that meet every term. Both these groups work constantly throughout the year to improve the school environment and student learning outcomes.Salmon Gums is a delightful and enthusiastic community in which to work! | ||||
