SCHOOL BACKGROUND

Our school is located on Rottnest Island, which is situated 18 kms off-shore from the city of Fremantle, Western Australia.

Rottnest Island is an A Class environmental reserve where all flora and fauna are protected.

The Island's main business operations & support agencies provide services to over 500,000 holiday makers and tourists who visit the Island each year.

Students enrolled at our school come from families who live on the island as part of their employment conditions. The majority of workers are employed by various support services on the island, the Rottnest Island Authority (such as Park Rangers), local businesses and police, nursing & school staff.

Travel to and from Rottnest Island is by ferry.
The journey takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on weather conditions

Rottnest Island is isolated from the mainland with travel to Fremantle, Perth and Hillarys dependant on limited ferry timetables. Although 500,000 visitors come to Rottnest each year, only 150 people actually live on the island. For the resident population, Rottnest Island is very much a 'small country town' in character and lifestyle.

Rottnest Island has a beautiful and unique marine environment providing residents and their families with an endless array of post card perfect bays and beaches for swimming, snorkelling and lazing in the sun.
Other Island pursuits include scuba diving, boating, fishing, surfing, sailing and golf.

A nursing post is staffed throughout the year by highly qualified nurse practitioners - with regular scheduled doctor visits. The Royal Flying Doctor Service - or emergency service aircraft - operates in the case of medical emergencies.

A day-care service is provided for children 0 - 4 years of age, based at the local 'Community House' - from which a playgroup also operates.

A number of cafes, restaurants and licensed premises provide dining and entertainment. The local indoor cinema screens latest release movies

Although the very first educational services began on the Island in 1856, a school was first gazetted in 1885 and has operated in a number of locations around the main settlement area near Thomson Bay.

The present two room school building was opened in 1963, with the main veranda later enclosed to provide office and additional classroom space. Major renovations were completed in 1992, with an extension to one classroom and general improvements to the grounds. A large, paved patio area has since been built - along with a small multi-purpose ECE classroom.

The school has a basketball court area, a combined sand-pit and playground, and access to a large neighbouring sports oval.

The school has undergone extensive up-grades during 2006 funded through a $147,000 'Investing in Our Schools' grant, including new:
* student computers;
* student, staff, office and library furniture;
* reverse cycle air-conditioning;
* fence and retaining wall repairs and extensions;
* creation of reticulated and shaded grass areas.

Rottnest Island Primary School is very well supported by parent and community volunteers who contribute in many ways to the planning and implementation of school programs.

Both staff and parents contribute to committees involved in fundraising, grounds and facilities development, canteen and the School Council.

OUR BELIEFS:

Rottnest Island Primary School has a strong belief that students learn developmentally.

With this belief, our learning programs and planning must be student centred and cater for their individual needs. Through a strong Pastoral Care approach students learn Life Skills which include how to take responsibility for their own behaviour.

Values Education across all eight Learning Areas is embedded into school planning and is ongoing. As such, there is great scope for innovation and creative thought that may lead to better ways of catering for the needs of students.

To underpin our commitment to the Curriculum Framework and the Outcomes and Standards Framework, our school has made a strong commitment to the First Steps Literacy and Maths philosophy - including teaching, learning, monitoring and assessment strategies and practices.

It is therefore expected that teachers coming into the school - and working in a partnership with our Education Assistants - will have competencies in:
* Multi-age group teaching Kindergarten to Year 7
* First Steps Reading
* First Steps Writing
* First Steps Number
* SIS Curriculum Manager - Monitoring & Evaluation
* Application of CAR Policy & Guidelines

The teaching and learning program of the school is based upon the following principles:

Children learn best in a comfortable, cooperative and supportive environment;

Students are provided with the opportunity to reach their academic potential;

Individual needs and differences are recognised and supported;

The physical, social and emotional well being of each child is promoted;

Teaching practices encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning;

Teachers and parents work together to benefit the child. Links with local artisans and community groups have generated the following programs:
* Extensive wall mural painting of the external school building
* Specialist music program
* Surf awareness program
* Surfing program
* Golf program
