Make:
Verdict - quite positive rating.

Compare with all other primary schools.
Situated in the northern suburb of Heathridge, Poseidon Primary School is located on the western side of the suburb, and takes its name from the street of the same name. A nautical theme is evident in the name of the street which surround the school. The names have been taken from Greek and Roman mythology and other nautical aspects - Poseidon being the God of the Sea. Significant redevelopment has occurred throughout the suburb over recent years. A new housing area on the corner of Ocean Reef Road and Marmion Avenue has also been created.

The school motto is - 'Teaching, Learning, Caring' and the school purpose statement: 'To provide a learning environment that facilitates the academic, social and personal growth of all children in the school,' reflects the holistic view the school community embraces towards education.

The school is comprised of three separate clusters. Each cluster has been named - Olympus, Athena and Atlantis - names which perpetuate the nautical theme, contributing to the school culture. In addition to the three cluster blocks there is a fully enclosed undercover assembly area which also houses the school canteen. The canteen operates daily and is administered and maintained by the Parents and Citizens' Association (P&C).

The school has three factions Antaeus, Oceanus and Triton. Students represent their factions in an array of sporting events throughout the year. A strong faction team spirit has been fostered at the school.

Poseidon Primary School has a very stable and experienced staff, teaching and non-teaching. Five of the teaching staff has Senior Teacher status. A strong team ethic exists as all staff members work together to gain the best possible outcomes for students. Non teaching staff positions and roles include a Registrar, School Officer, Library Officer, School Nurse, School Psychologist and Social Worker, Pre Primary Assistant and Kindergarten Assistant, Teachers' Assistant, Special Needs Assistant, Gardener/Handyperson and a Canteen Manager employed by the Parents and Citizens' Association.

A comprehensive Physical Education and Sports program operates as well as a successful school fitness program, which runs three mornings a week. Fitness is promoted through a multi-level fitness challenge plan with students' achievements at each level being acknowledged and rewarded.
At recesses, the coordinator also ensures our students have plenty of healthy play options. Examples are: Bocce, Table Tennis and Mini Tennis, Cricket, Football, Soccer and Basketball. The level of good sportsmanship has always been evident at Poseidon and is something of which the whole community is proud.

A Learning Technologies coordinator assists staff and students in using technology as a tool to assist with learning. The coordinator manages the school's learning technology plan. There is a high quality computer laboratory in the library, classroom computers in all classes and laboratories in Athena and Atlantis blocks.

The school has Languages Other Than English (LOTE) - French and all students in Years 3-7 have one weekly lesson of 60 minutes duration.
LOTE also features at the school assemblies.

A PEAC (Primary Extension and Challenge) program is coordinated by the Deputy Principal. Many of the extension students use their Information Technology skills to produce short cartoons and films

A fair and consistent Behaviour Management in Schools Policy and a Pastoral Care program operates. The Pastoral Care program empowers students to set personal goals and supports them in their efforts to achieve them.

English as a Second Language (ESL) students are catered for within the programs operating within the school. Students from different cultural backgrounds enrich the school environment.

Parents are considered as partners in the educational process and the school has an 'open door' policy for it's community, with many parents assisting teachers in the classroom and in managing the school's considerable resources. The students come from supportive home environments. Staff work closely with parents and the student services team to improve student outcomes.

Students are able to participate in a variety of activities both before school and during lunchtimes, which include school choir, instrumental music, computer projects, and environmental aspects such as student gardens, school nursery, worm farms and Water-wise activities. Most sports are catered for locally and many students participate and belong to various junior sporting clubs, in particular weekend netball team, coordinated by parents.

Poseidon Primary School has a very enthusiastic P&C body that works with the school to provide a wide range of educational resources for students and also to foster the sense of community which exists at the school. The P&C raised the funds to fully cable the school and to provide the data projector and playground equipment.

There is an active School Council. This group assists the school with planning and policy making and monitors the extent to which we achieve our purpose. This group has developed and supports a formal school dress code and all students wear the Poseidon uniform with pride.

Poseidon Primary School has a well-stocked fully automated library integrated into the whole school's curriculum network.

The school has a regular weekly Wednesday 2:10pm early close. To accommodate the early close the school day commences at 8:40am with students entering classrooms at 8:30am.

Students from Years 4 - 7 work with staff to elect representatives to the Student Council, which reports directly to members of the Administration Team. Their duty statements provide opportunities to develop leadership skills. Student Councillors promote the school's ethos and provide excellent role models for the student body.

Parents interested in enrolling students are warmly invited to visit and view our school facilities and discuss the programs available at Poseidon Primary School
