| Port Kennedy Primary School is located within the City of Rockingham, 55 kilometres south of Perth, in an area of significant residential growth. The school opened in 1996 with an enrolment just exceeding 300 students, but this figure has steadily increased, to the current enrolment of 740. Land sales currently occurring to the west and north west of the school will ensure that student enrolments will continue to increase. The school has a predominantly experienced staff, with many having been foundation staff members in 1996. In 2002, the school commenced a kindergarten program, catering for 80 children, a pre-primary program with 39 children and a further 620 students from years 1 to 7, accommodated in 23 classes. Port Kennedy Primary School was reclassified to Level 6 at the start of 2003 after being afforded Acting Level 6 classification for the past five years. The current administration comprises Principal and three Deputy Principals. There are 25 full-time and 9 part-time teachers as well as a further 10 non-teaching staff. We also have the benefit of two school psychologists (0.3) and a community nurse (0.2). The school has a purpose-built art with kiln and a music room, but in recent years, the music room has been used as a classroom due to overcrowding. Since 2001, the students have been able to use the art room for its intended purpose and not as a general classroom, thereby providing them with tremendous opportunities to extend their creative talents. The music room has been used for its intended purpose since 2002 due to the appointment of a full time music teacher. Other facilities include an undercover area and oval, which is a dual use facility and managed in conjunction with the City of Rockingham. The school has three blocks of permanent classrooms (12 in all) and is utilising a further 10 demountable / transportable classrooms, all of which are equipped with air conditioning. An outcomes-based approach towards teaching, learning, assessment and reporting is being progressively implemented across the school. Students have access to computers (and the Internet) in all classrooms and the library. The use of technology as a valuable learning tool is being promoted throughout the school and used by teachers and students to enhance the teaching and learning experiences. A committed and energetic Parents and Citizens Association provides invaluable support to the educational program at the school. There is a strong focus on maintaining positive and productive school-community relations, which benefits all concerned. The School Council, comprising the Principal, staff representation and parent representation, oversees the directions of the school and operates very effectively. | ||||
