| Parkwood Primary School commenced as West Lynwood Primary School in 1975 and is located adjacent to Lynwood Senior High School, at the eastern end of the Fremantle-Peel Education District. The school sits among attractive grounds, containing many native trees and shrubs. The students enjoy very good facilities and equipment to enhance their learning experiences. Parkwood Primary School blends in with, and is a part of, the local community. Some years ago, Parkwood was one of the largest primary schools in Western Australia, but through demographic changes, the student population has declined in recent years. As at August 2005, the student population is 582 from Kindergarten to Year 7. This includes 90 children in the Intensive English Centre. The Intensive English Centre (IEC) addresses the needs of refugees, displaced children and others who have little or no English. Many of these have very special needs and the role of the IEC is to provide these children with a secure, nurturing environment in which they may develop proficiency in written and spoken English. Many arrive with no prior education. After 12 to 18 months, these children have developed sufficient skills to enable them to graduate from the Centre and enrol in their local school. As Parkwood Primary School is one of only 7 primary schools in Western Australia with an IEC, our students are drawn from as far afield as Armadale and Rivervale. The school has a stable, experienced staff, who share a commitment to addressing the educational, social and emotional needs of our students. There is also a commitment towards outcomes-based education and involving parents as partners in education. Parkwood Primary School has a multi-cultural student population with an English as a Second Language (ESL) program in operation at the school for those children for whom English may not be spoken at home. Students of this school have access to a range of programs, including Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC) for identified students, instrumental music and environmental education programs. In recent years, there has been an emphasis on the Arts, with a school choir and its involvement in music festivals and competitions. In 2005 however, the focus has shifted, in response to community concerns about obesity and increasingly sedentary lifestyles of children. The music specialist position has made way for a physical education specialist, who leads a whole-school approach towards improving the health, fitness and well-being of our students. In support of this, our P&C Association has bought and installed a fitness track around the oval. The Parents and Citizens Association is a vibrant, involved body that works proactively to support the educational program at the school and provide opportunities to enhance the experiences of the children. The P&C and school staff work in collaboration to achieve these goals. A legacy of the commitment of the P&C is that the school is fully air-conditioned. The school has a long association with Chung Wah Chinese School, which operates from the premises each Saturday morning. For a number of years, Parkwood has fielded a hockey team in a local weekend competition and produced some very promising players, a number of whom have progressed to the specialist hockey program at Como Secondary College.Kim Doust Principal August 2005 | ||||
