| PALMYRA PRIMARY SCHOOL The original Palmyra, City of Palms was an ancient Syrian city, considered by the Romans to rank fourth of the seven wonders of the ancient world. THE COMMUNITY Palmyra is an older dormitory suburb undergoing urban renewal with the subdivision of large blocks to create strata titled dwellings. The provision of passive recreation facilities, such as parks in the suburb, is such that the City of Melville is developing dual-purpose facilities resulting in the school grounds becoming a focus for casual activities and weekend junior sports. During the 2006 school year Palmyra Primary School hosted the Bicton/Palmyra Little Athletics Association and the Palmyra Junior Football Club teams with the use of the school oval for training purposes. This is anticipated to be an ongoing arrangement. The P & C is very supportive and is active in fundraising. Through their efforts Palmyra Primary School is able to widen the educational opportunity for all students attending the school. Parents actively contribute to school planning through the School Council which is an integral part of the decision making process within the school community. STUDENTS The student population is showing steady growth with a low transience factor. We are maintaining the intake numbers of approximately 350 students. The school has an excellent reputation in the community, providing a high quality of educational delivery and maintaining high standards of behaviour. Palmyra Primary School provides a strong and stable platform from which its students can make the transition from primary education to secondary education. STAFF All staff have permanent status which enables Palmyra Primary to provide a seamless education package which can be tailored to suit the needs of its student population. This enables Palmyra Primary to develop a safe, supportive and student centred curriculum sustained and improved each year. Through the combined team effort of staff , catering for the student is seen as combined accountability and conscience by the staff. This unifies and strengthens parent, student and teacher communication pathways. SPECIAL FEATURES The school library is well equipped with IBM compatible computers, in addition to computers in all classrooms. An automated library was recently built to facilitate the development of an educational setting to enhance the growth of life long learning skills of the students. In addition, LOTE classes in Indonesian run in all years and co link through the Society and Environment curriculum. A music specialist program is offered which enables the students to develop both individual and choral music attributes in a safe and secure environment. This program is enhanced by an Instrumental Music program run in association with the School of Instrumental Music. The speciality instrument is that of the trumpet. Running parallel to this is a keyboard instructional course. SCHOOL HISTORY Palmyra Primary School was founded in 1913 with classes for 19 children held in the Palmyra Mechanics Institute Hall. The current buildings date from 1915 when 60 students were enrolled. The population grew steadily to peak between 1958 and 1963 with over 700 primary students. Student population has fallen steadily since then to a low of 280 (primary and pre-primary students) in 1989. . The school's 75h anniversary in 1988 was marked by the planting of 75 palms, each donated by a local family with close links with the school. GROUNDS AND BUILDINGS The school is on two separate sites on diagonally opposite corners of a road intersection. Kindergarten students occupy the 'off-site' centre. Pre-primary classes moved on-site in 1998. In 2006 Palmyra Primary School added an additional area to house the increase number of and Pre-Primary /Kindergarten students. The traditional design, brick and limestone, heritage listed, main building was constructed in stages from 1915 to 1957. The current building houses generalist classroom, specialist classrooms and storerooms. The grounds are of a high standard. The central courtyard area is undergoing an extreme make over to facilitate quiet learning areas and active sport facilities. This duel area is anticipated to again enhance the learning and recreational opportunities for all students attending the school. In association with the general renewal policy for the school, the external and internal areas are receiving timely renovations. Garden areas are well maintained and contribute to the overall high standards maintained by the school. OPPORTUNITIES The automation of the library and the new undercover area are two of a number of elements which are enabling the school to revamp and extend its programs in a number of areas; i.e. physical education, music, dance and library information systems. Palmyra is a pioneer school in Values Education. Technology studies and information research can now be pursued in the school's computer and library centre. With the growing stability within the teaching and student populations, the school will continue to grow and provide the ideal learning oppertunities for the future population of the local intake area. | ||||
