| Orelia Primary School Profile 2006 Locality Orelia Primary School is situated in the older section of the Kwinana Town site. The school and pre primary centre and kindergarten are on the same site, which is adjacent to Kwinana Senior High School. Overview Orelia Primary School opened in May 1969 as a Class 11 school, but reclassified to a Class 1A school in 1971. It remained a Class 1A until 1982 when it was reclassified as a Class 1, where it has remained. During the 1970's the student population rose to approximately 900 children. Current numbers, including pre primary students are 314. Orelia Primary School was originally one cluster comprising 6 classrooms and an Administration Block. In 1971 two more clusters were opened, with the school canteen and oval being completed in 1972. During 1989 two rooms were converted to make a Pre Primary Centre, which was subsequently divided in 1993 to cater for 2 full-time 5 year-old units. A Kindy was constructed from two classrooms and commenced in 2000. A new Library Resource Centre was constructed and completed in 2003 and a new administration area upgrade in 2004. Currently there are 9 Primary; A Kindergarten; 2 Pre Primary Classes operating at Orelia Primary School, with other rooms being used for: Art and Music/Drama Rooms AIEO(Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer) GIR teacher ( Getting It Right ) 4 days a week LSC (Learning Support Coordinator) 1 day a week Computer Room with computer bank also in the Library. Physical EdUcation Library . The grounds surrounding the school are extensive and include a large oval with cricket practise nets, an Adventure Playground, two bituminised basketball courts and large grassed areas around the school buildings. Attached to the school and housed separately is a Dental Therapy Unit. Kwinana Education Precinct The Kwinana Senior High School and the feeder primary schools are nearing the completion of the planning stage of a redevelopment of education in Kwinana. The new senior section will be known as Gilmore College and from 2008 will provide education for years 7 to 12. Orelia Primary School will be able to share some of the redeveloped facilities and will offer an education for Years K-6. It is planned that Orelia will maintain a strong focus on the continuation of quality education K-12. Currently the Orelia Primary School and the Kwinana Senior run an extensive Transition Program timetable throughout Year 7. This will be extended to include the year 6 level in readiness for the movement of the Year 7 cohort to the Gilmore College SPECIAL FEATURES OF ORELIA The school has very strong individualised programs in both Education and social needs. Parents are very supportive of the programs and their full participation in their child's education is strongly encouraged. The school has three main teaching blocks, a Kindergarten an undercover area, Library and an oval. It has Art and Music/Drama Rooms. It also has specialist teachers in Art, LOTE ( Language Other Than English) Italian and Physical Education . In addition to this it has teacher assistants, an AIEO (Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer), an LSC ( Learning Support Coordinator) and GIR ((Getting It Right) Teacher . The Library, built in 2003, is generously equipped and fully automated. The school has an extensive Learning technology computer network and the Internet is operating in every classroom as well as in the library and the computer laboratory. The school has very attractrive grounds with numerous mature trees providing coolness for the community in summer. All the classrooms are airconditioned as is the library and Computer Room. There is a small but active PSPI (Parent School Partnership Initiatives) committee which runs an extensive Aboriginal Studies Activity Week each year usually in term 3 each year A Dental Clinic is on site and children from Orelia have full access to the clinic. Orelia has a very active School Council and Parent and Citizens Association both of which meet regularly throughout the year. Parent commitment is very high. Most students wear the school uniform and the school dress code is strongly supported by the School Council and the P & C . The school has strong SAER (Students at Educational Risk) ,BMAD ( Behaviour Management and Discipline) Systems and a Pastoral Care Program, of which parents are kept fully informed. The ethos of the school is on education and student responsibility. The school receives support for the program's development from many areas including Fremantle Education Office Student Services (provides support in School Psychologists, Social workers, Welfare Officers and Curriculum support), the Kwinana Medical Centre, Kidlink Family Centre and the Kwinana Town Council.
