| Northam Primary School is 126 years old, claiming to be one of the oldest primary schools in the state. The school is still located on the original site within walking distance of Northam's main street. New school buildings replacing the original structure were opened in 1978. The school has two, two storey wings plus a third wing and an administration block. There are two pre-primary units on site. The kindergarten is located off-site, but within short walking distance. The main school facilities include a pleasant central covered courtyard and gardens where student learning activities can take place adjacent to classrooms. A large covered assembly area caters for whole school occasions such as assemblies, concerts, visiting artists and some sporting activities. The school population ( 393 students from K - 7 ) has been very stable for the last five years and comprises students from small rural localities, farms and the townsite of Northam. School buses transport the outlying students to and from the school. Northam Primary is a local intake school, meaning that only students within the gazetted boundary may be admitted. Continued enrolment pressure makes it difficult for students outside this boundary to gain placement unless special circumstances apply. Northam Primary School staff consists of graduate teachers and teachers with many years of experience. This blend of staff, working together as a team, ensures that all students are exposed to a forward thinking, comprehensive and engaging curriculum. The school places a major emphasis on social skills and values. Northam Primary holds a powerful image in the community. There is an overwhelming acceptance by students to wear school uniform, reflecting their pride in belonging to the school. Northam Primary students are often involved in outside community events. The school has always taken great pride in the success of its students and places considerable emphasis on academic achievement. Students have achieved medal and high distinction results in national academic competitions. Past students have gained entry into the most competitive university courses. Participation in physical education is an integral part of the curriculum. Students are also involved in interschool and weekend sporting competitions. The school has an active School Council and Parents and Citizens Association. The Association is very supportive and has provided many facilities for the school. We believe the process of education involves a shared responsibility and strong commitment from all three parties - teachers, students and parents.
