Newton Primary School opened in 1981, commencing with 156 students and providing a primary school educational program for Pre-Primary to year 7 students. Numbers peaked in 1992 with a school population of 450 students. In 2005 366 students attend Newton Primary and the school provides a comprehensive program for students from Kindergarten to Year Seven.

Newton Primary School is situated 10 km south of Fremantle in Marvell Avenue, Spearwood. The land around the school was predominently used for market gardening and quarrying until approximately 30 years ago. The area now consists mainly of single residential housing.

The school was constructed on the site of the limestone quarry. This site is listed as a local heritage site and limestone from the quarry was used in the construction of buildings at the University of Western Australia and to construct the Fremantle War Memorial. The links to the quarry are proudly shown on the school emblem.

The school has a level 5 classification. Students attending the school come from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds, for a number of the students English is not their first language. A large number of the students attending the school are fluent in the following languages: Croatian, Yugoslav, Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian. In addition many of the members of the school population are third generation attendees, having had parents or grandparents attend the school. This factor greatly contributes to the strong sense of community and family values, which exists in the school.

The motto of the school is 'Care', care for self, the environment, school and property and others. Our core values are:- individual dignity and worth, initiative, responsibility and cooperation. Newton Primary School exists to provide high quality learning and teaching programs, in which students display positive attitudes, show initiative, mutual respect and appropriate behaviour.

The educational programs of the school are based on the generic vision of the school working together to press for and support student improvement. For this reason there is a strong emphasis on building a collaborative school culture that promotes innovation and dealing with curriculum change.

We aim to create a school community, which is recognised for its excellence - relevance - self worth and service.

We aim to provide an educational program, which is:

At Newton Primary School a challenging and comprehensive curriculum is provided. The school provides the eight mandated Key Learning Areas (KLA's) plus numerous co-curricular programs.

Student learning is enhanced by our Multi-Media Centre programs - Library and Learning Technologies. Computers throughout the school are networked and access the World Wide Web, which is strictly monitored. There is a bank of computers in the Library, a bank of computers in a designated computer room and at least three computers in each classroom. In addition students have access to an iBook laboratory, which enables them to utilize the wireless technology in the school. Students have access to a wide range of peripheral hardware including digital cameras and digital videos, scanners and so forth. In addition, the school offers a number of programs which parents are expected to pay for.

STAFF
The school teaching staff enjoys a deserved reputation for its commitment to students and the school community. The staff readily adapts to change and is committed to improved student outcomes. Staff are encouraged to work as a team to introduce reform. Collaborative DOTT times have been organised to enable teachers of like year levels to work together to implement the Curriculum Framework and Student Outcome Statements.

The effective operation of the school is assisted by an efficient and supportive non-teaching staff. The school has a registrar, a part time office assistant, a part time library assistant, a part time junior primary aide, two full time pre primary aides, a full time kindergarten aide and a full time gardener.

Many of the school staff have been at the school for ten years or more and are actively involved in a range of community based programs and projects.

SCHOOL FACILITIES AND RESOURCES
Newton Primary School is unique in the fact that it has been built on the site of a former limestone quarry; as such the oval sits in the cocoon of the walls of the former quarry.

The school site is raised and greatly benefits from the sea breeze during the summer months.

In 2001 and 2002 the P&C worked to provide air-conditioning to all classrooms, specialist areas and the administration area greatly increasing student and staff comfort during the summer months.

The grounds are well established and provide for the varying needs of all students. Three separate playing areas exist and the students have access to two playing ovals, two basketball areas as well as shaded adventure playgrounds in two of the playing areas.

The school has 12 classrooms, 2 pre primary centre, a kindergarten, a library/resource centre, a computer laboratory, a music room, a covered assembly area, an art room and a canteen. Each block of four classrooms is equipped with a central wet area and adequate storage facilities.

The school provides:

* Support teachers to assist class teachers in implementing enrichment programs for both the less able and talented students
* The school library which is central to the education programs. All children have access to the library and may borrow fiction and non-fiction books
* Computer technology. All classrooms are fully networked to each other and the school library. Students have access to the computers to enrich their learning experiences
* Music room and art/craft room which are fully equipped for student use
Specialist teachers in physical education, music, art and LOTE - Italian.

FAMILY INVOLVEMENT
Members of student's family's are encouraged to be involved in the school. A School Council, consisting of the Principal, four parent representatives and two staff representatives, meets each term. A very active Parent and Citizens Association meets twice per term. This group provides the school with a wide range of resources, both physical and human. Sub committees of the Parents and Citizens Association include a Canteen Committee and a Fundraising Committee. Parents are encouraged to be involved in policy development in areas such as Managing Student Behaviour.
