| Newman Primary School is located in the town of Newman in the East Pilbara region of Western Australia approximately 1200 kms from Perth. Originally built in 1969 as a District High School, Newman Primary School is ideally located adjacent to the central business area of Newman and close to the aquatic centre, medical, police and child care facilities. The town of Newman was originally built by BHPBilliton Iron Ore to exclusively house and service its workforce at the largest open cut iron ore mine in the Southern Hemisphere. Although it is now an open town, Newman is still very dependent on the maintenance of BHPBilliton's mining operations for its survival. With the recent boom in mining, the town's population has increased dramatically from around 3 000 in 2003 to 7 000 in 2007. Likewise, the school's enrolment numbers have grown in recent years, and are currently around 350 students from Kindergarten to Year 7. Newman PS's purpose is to provide a safe and caring environment where all students can develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to achieve their potential. Students are encouraged to value excellence, integrity, individual difference and to show respect for each other and themselves through the school's Star Club positive behaviour program. Students from a variety of different backgrounds and cultures attend the school including European, Asian and African. The school currently has a 21% Aboriginal population. The school's staff is a blend of enthusiastic young teachers enjoying their first teaching position and more experienced teaching and non-teaching staff who have made Newman their long term home. In addition to providing quality learning experiences in the eight main learning areas outlined in the Curriculum Framework, the school provides specialist staff in the areas of The Arts (Music), Japanese and Physical Education. In addition, the school has the services of a Getting It Right Numeracy Specialist (1 day/week), Getting It Right Literacy Specialist (2 days/week) and a Learning Support Coordinator (1 day/week) to assist teachers in their delivery of learning experiences which cater for the individual needs of students. The school has an integrated computer network which will be further enhanced in 2007 as part of the 'Learning with ICT' Program. The school is set in a landscape of fully reticulated lawns and well maintained gardens providing a pleasant working environment for both staff and students. The P&C operated school canteen opens on a daily basis providing healthy and nutritious food alternatives for the school population. Parent involvement is welcomed and encouraged at the school and this can be provided through support in classrooms, in the library and at educational or sporting events. The School Council is actively involved in school planning and review processes and the Parents and Citizens Association supports the school through a variety of volunteer and fund raising activities. The school learning environment is enhanced by the support of BHP Billiton and its many community based partnership programs with sporting and cultural organisations. | ||||
