| Mount Lawley is a Level 5 primary school opened in 1912. Of brick and iron construction it fits in with the Federation style of the area. The school has air-conditioned classrooms including a Library Resource Centre, an Art/Craft Room, and a Computer Laboratory. In addition, there is a covered assembly area with stage, a Dental Therapy Centre and an Out of School Care Centre. There are two off site Pre Primary Centres, in Woodsome Street and a Kindergarten on Railway Parade Mt Lawley. The catchment area can be considered as generally professional and semi professional with a strong base of self employed business people. There is a high retention rate of pupils with usually over 60â0of students who complete years 1 to 7. There is a strong sense of community, which leads to extremely healthy parent support and involvement in the school. The School Community through the School Council plays an active role in the determination of school priorities. A strong and active P & C is underpinned by a vibrant set of committees. The staff are all committed, experienced teachers who tend to stay for lengthy periods. Our school community respects tradition and aims for a broad education with value placed on music and the arts, courtesy and consideration, sport and a healthy life style and the ability to speak and perform for an audience. Underpinning this is a strong commitment to academic excellence via the Curriculum Framework and outcomes-based education. The Sports Spread and the expansive Instrumental music programs help to provide a broad enriched education for our students. The music culture is complemented by two choirs, an orchestra, a band, a guitar and recorder ensembles that perform at assemblies and the wider community. Our educational program is complemented by a very competent support staff and the provision of quality equipment in classrooms and the automated Library Resource Centre. Our school Ethos reads 'Desired characteristics to be fostered across the curriculum include students developing: inquiring minds; problem solving ability; effective communication skills; independent creative thinking and an eagerness to accept challenges. Students need to develop a positive attitude to themselves and others; have compassion and respect for the rights of others; develop personal qualities of self acceptance, initiative, self confidence, an ability, to make their own decisions and accept the consequences of them'. A democratic whole school approach to management, budgeting and decision making is a feature where weekly staff meetings show the importance placed on communication and involvement as a whole staff. Open communication from both the Principal and the staff is valued by the parents. The weekly newsletter and the school's website is a forum for the exchange of students' work and news. A number of special programs and strategies have been implement to enhance our school's learning environments. Some of these include the following: The introduction of video editing and animations in Learning Technologies; the implementation of a collaborative strategy across the school; the implementation of a Students at Educational Risk strategy, the continuation of a Learning Assistance Program (LAP) to include parents in reading; the development of parent workshops in computers, reading and mathematics by school personnel and the celebration of school community achievements through Ripper Recess and Special Days. The school's ambience is one of calm, energetic endeavour. Activities of interest and educational merit take place regularly in this happy and environmentally aware learning environment. | ||||
