| Graylands Primary School opened its doors in 1917 and has developed a rich history in a variety of education roles. In addition to its role in primary school education, it has at various times, included a Migrant Education centre, an Intensive English Centre, a Teachers' College demonstration school and a PEAC (Primary Extension and Challenge) centre. Situated in Mt Claremont, the school provides quality education from Kindergarten to Year 7 for families from Mt Claremont, Swanbourne and Claremont. The school has attractive, well established grounds with extensive shaded grassed areas throughout. The Junior block has been landscaped to provide shaded seating. Purpose built playgrounds for Junior and Senior students have been provided through the ongoing efforts of our Parents and Citizens association. In addition to the grassed playing field on site, the school has access to the Mt Claremont oval. The school is well known for high achievement in the areas of Language and Performing Arts. Students regularly receive finalist status and state awards in the area of literature. A bi-annual school musical production showcases the students learning in the Arts and provides a major event to celebrate the school's achievements. Recitals in the local community by recorder groups and the school band provide further enriched experience for students in the music and performing arts program. Academic learning in the areas of Maths, Science and Social Studies is supported by opportuntites for practical application. Sudents are involved in a variety of excursions and project work at school and in the wider community. A focus on environmental education, active citizenship and sustainable development has grown over the past two years. An Early Years screening program for students in Years K-3 has been developed to support speech, language and literacy development. The innovative sports program developed by the staff is highly valued by the school community. Sports carnivals are specifically designed to provide opportunities for participation, team work and sportsmanship whilst continuing to foster and value the competitive spirit of the events. Strong links with the community are a feature of the school program. The school hosts the regional Earth Carers group, works closely with the Friends of Lake Claremont and participates in annual visits by the Senior Citizen's storytelling group. A YMCA child care facility is also hosted on site. Our senior students have participated in a valuable rural revegetation program for the past six years. A capable, experienced and caring staff of teachers, education assistants and anciliary staff work together to develop and implement quality programs. The school has two level three teachers and a deputy principal who provide program leadership and collaborative support for teachers. Strong parent involvement in a variety of ways provides invaluable support for the school. | ||||
