| Nature of School Community and Catchment Area The school is located in the suburb of Millars Well in the town of Karratha, which is approximately 1700km north of Perth. It is part of the Pilbara Education District. The town of Karratha is in the Shire of Roebourne, which is dominated by mining interests (namely salt, iron ore and natural gas), and boasts a solid infrastructure. The school draws children from families mainly working for the mining companies and their associated contractors, government employees, Australian Army and private enterprise. The school's catchment area includes many new housing developments within Baynton and Millars Well. The students and their families are from a diverse cultural background including Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders, as well as Indian and European families. There is an excellent relationship between the school and its parent community as well as the broader community, along with a strong and supportive P&C.Staffing Profile As a Level 5 school, Millars Well PS has a non-teaching Principal and two Assistant Principals (who teach part-time), a School Officer and the Registrar in the administration area. The current number of classroom teachers teaching students from Kindergarten to Year 7 is 17. The school has a LOTE programme (Japanese), a Music Specialist, an Art/Physical Education teacher, as well as a Getting It Right Literacy Specialist Teacher. The staff also includes an Interpreter for the Deaf, other Special Needs Assistants, an Aboriginal Islander Educational Officer, Educational Assistants and a Library Officer. Based on need and innovative timetabling, the school utilizes specialist staff and administrators to implement various classroom support programs. The staff at Millars Well PS are committed to providing a safe, happy environment for students who attend, where they can develop a lifelong love of learning. The school uses inclusive practices to cater for the diverse range of cognitive, physical and behavioural differences in the students. The school is inclusive, catering for children with a variety of disabilities and cultures. There is a strong focus on developing students self concept through values education, social skills training and assigning students with responsibilities. Special Features of the School The school is of an open area design, with two teaching blocks of eight classrooms. Along with the 16 classrooms are a Performing Arts Area and an Art/Craft work area. The school has two Pre-primary classrooms and a transportable Kindergarten building on the school grounds, which make up the Early Childhood Centre. The school has a curriculum network which gives every classroom access to the Internet as well as the ability to communicate with each other through a school intranet. All of these areas are air-conditioned, as are the Administration Block, the Library/Resource Centre and the Canteen. The school also has a covered assembly area, adjacent playing fields, basketball and netball courts, cricket nets and playground equipment. The school and its community have high expectations of students in terms of organization, punctuality and behaviour. There are opportunities for excellence with such programs as PEAC , SIM music, School choir, Talented and Gifted and Learning Technology and English as a Second Language. Our school motto is 'Friendship and Achievement' and we endeavour to reflect this in our social/emotional and academic learning programs. Our school song also mirrors these values. Emphasis is placed upon understanding values and ethics and applying them to learning and social interactions. Millars Well's school vision reflects the school's commitment to values, excellence, respect, inclusivity and diversity, access and participation. School Decision Making and Consultation Process The school operates with an open and inclusive approach to decision making. The School Council operates with parent, staff and community members, including the Principal and P&C President. The staff have a strong commitment to co-operative and collaborative relationships between staff, students and parents. This develops the communication and mutual support, and values the partnership between parents and staff. School History School was opened on 13th July 1981 with forty nine students. Mr Bob Pollard was the inaugral principal. The canteen in its present building was first started in 1983. Prior to that it operated out of one of the senior rooms. | ||||
