| FACILITIES Consultation in relation to a new site for Melville Primary School began in 2002. Building commenced in 2004 and the finished site was handed over on May 20th, 2005. The new school consists of 14 primary classrooms, 3 early childhood education rooms, a modern centralised resource centre with science and art rooms attached. A fully enclosed covered area was also provided encompassing a sports store room, gardener's amenities, a canteen and a stage with an adjacent specialist music room. The administration block is entered via Curtis Rd and includes all staff amenities. Conveniently, a wireless network covers the entire site. Extensive early childhood, junior and upper primary play areas have been developed. A multi-purpose hard court area is surrounded by extensive grassed areas and an oval which is jointly maintained by the City of Melville. The broader community provide outstanding support by way of social and fundraising ventures. Our superb playgrounds and facilities are in large part due to contributions and fundraising by the parents and local community. STUDENTS Currently there are 121 pre-primary and kindergarten ages children spread between 5 classes and there are 14 classes between year 1 and 7, with a total of 368 children. All classes sit close or within the recommended class size. We aim to provide opportunities for students to participate in a relevant and enriching curriculum within a supportive environment, which is free from harassment and discrimination. The school goes to considerable lengths to ensure the safety and security of students on site. There is a strong emphasis on pastoral care and social development through the virtues program. What we want for our Students: * To achieve benchmark competencies in literacy and numeracy. * To become independent learners. * To be able to think at higher levels. * To improve their self-direction. * To become active explorers through the inquiry process. * To uphold the five values of the Curriculum Framework. Key Objectives in Support of the Government School Plan: * To establish an outcomes approach to curriculum with clearly defined standards. * To strengthen professional excellence. * To provide more scope for decision making at a local level. * To use resources more efficiently and effectively. In addition, we can only achieve these outcomes with the support and involvement of our parents and community. We provide a wide range of diverse opportunities for the students to provide them with a variety of experiences so that they can look forward optimistically to life in further education and society. Students have recently received awards in Science and Performing Arts, a testimony to the time, effort and direction given by staff and the community. STAFF Melville Primary is a Merit Select School. Where clear vacancies exist, staff are merit selected. There are approximately 50 teaching and non-teaching staff on-site. We are blessed with competent, caring teachers who engage with Outcomes Based Education in-line with the requirements of the Department of Education and Training WA. Staff promote the shared values of learning, excellence, equity and care. These are emphasised with the students in class and in social situations. In keeping with these values the school has adopted the virtues program which is fostered, promoted and evidenced by the behaviour and actions of the students. The staff are developing collaborative strategies to maximise the benefit of the facilities. The staff also look forward to developing collaborative learning strategies with the students to enhance their ability to learn and interact in a productive and positive manner. | ||||
