ETHOS OF MARMION PRIMARY SCHOOL

To develop and create a learning community which is dedicated to preparing students to be able to work and play with others as well as being productive, socially responsive and responsible citizens of the future.

The focus is on providing learning opportunities that will allow students to achieve their potential. This is done in a caring environment that respects the rights of all members and recognises that children are our prime consideration.

The school's core values are:

Learning, excellence, equity and care
A commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and achievement of potential
Self acceptance and respect of self
Respect and conern for others and their rights
Social and civic responsibility
Environmental responsibility

Marmion is a coastal community some 15km from Perth. It is a well established locality with strong links between residents and the school. A very strong community spirit exists.

Marmion has a caring, energetic and experienced staff dedicated to meeting the needs of students. There are 20 teaching staff and 12 non-teaching staff.

The school celebrated its 40th birthday in 1996 and during the current year will celebrate its 50th birthday with a range of activities throughout the year. The buildings include a traditional linear structure of 9 teaching areas, a six classroom cluster block and a double Pre-Primary Centre that was erected for the commencement of the 1997 school year. The school also has an offsite Kindergarten located in High Street, Marmion. A covered assembly area is used for regular parent assemblies, musical evenings and graduation nights. The buildings are set in expansive grounds with watered ovals and natural bush.

During the latter half of 2000 a major building program was undertaken at the school with the building of an Information Centre and conversion of the old library into a classroom and art-craft/T&E room. The Information Centre, which features a magnificent leadlight window created by students and local artists, was completed in March 2001.

The specialist programs include music, library and LOTE (German), which is taught from Years 2 - 7. An instrumental music program includes violins (Years 3 -5), violas (Years 4 and 5) and a String Ensemble for these children. Some Year 6 and 7 students are taught the clarinet or brass instrument. In partnership with a neighbouring school, an after school band of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments has been formed.

A strong sporting profile is also a feature of our school. Specialists in various sports visit the school to run coaching clinics for students in Years 1-7. Children also participate in interschool swimming, athletics and winter sports.

There is a strong commitment to collaborative planning and teamwork across the school. Classes have been grouped together to facilitate this approach.

All students have regular use of Learning Technologies for computer, assisted learning, publication of writing, image enhancement and research. Other uses include the use of Web Page design packages and Powerpoint to develop multimedia presentations.

The provision of a modern school-wide network, which commenced in 1998 has been extended and enhanced through the deployment of funds from the State Government's Learning Technologies Funding. The established laboratory, of 16 networked IBM compatible computers, has been expanded outwards, to link all classrooms to a local area network using Windows NT Server. This has given both Internet and E-mail access to all classes from Pre-primary to Year 7. With a current computer to student ratio of 1:9.8, we have reached the Government targets for the end of 2002.

The school uses a variety of resources to support student learning. This includes:-

-Teacher Assistant support for every Year level, (funded by the Parents & Citizens' Association and with school funds) and support teacher programs.
-A Student Services team that includes School Psychologist and School Nurse also provides support.

SCHOOL DECISION-MAKING AND CONSULTATION PROCESSES

Marmion Primary School aims to foster and strengthen links between students, staff, parents and members of the broader community. The decision making and consultation process operates with the School Council, the Parents & Citizens' Association, staff committees and student prefects.

The local community is very supportive of school activities. The school also enjoys parent support in such areas as classroom support, sport, library, with book club, typing the school newsletter, as well as managing the canteen, uniforms, safety house and recycling programs.

Regular communication between staff and parents is encouraged. Some of the formal links include semester reports, student portfolios, fortnightly newsletters, student diaries, notes, pre-arranged interviews and parent information evenings.
