CURRICULUM

Music

The school has a fulltime music specialist who provides a fundamental music programm for years 1-7 students. Along with this, the School of Instrumental Music (SIM) which provides tuition for selected Yr 3-7 students in strings. This includes the opportunity for children to participate in ensemble work.

Added to this, the Music Specialist offers a private instrumental program which feeds into a school band. The children are able to learn their chosen instrument on a user pays system before school, and participate in either the Year 5, 6 or 7 band.

Physical & Health Education

The school has a specialist who works with classes and staff two days a week. In the early years the major focus is on the development of Fundamental Movement Skills so that children develop confidence and competency to be involved successfully in team games and individual sports in the middle years.
The program is broad based with clinics in many sports as well as the basic games of football, netball, cricket and athletics. The Year 7s are able to participate in sailing whilst most students have opportunities in golf, rugby, volley ball and cross-country running.

Students at Educational Risk (SAER)

The school has a comprehensive tracking system co-ordinated by and supported by a Learning Support Co-ordinator. The aim is to identify SAER early and provide specific intervention. These students are either identified through our formal testing, teacher or parent observations or referral from an outside agency.

In the junior years, teachers make use of an aide to provide one on one or small group assistance, which ever is appropriate, with the aim to have students working within their class on individualised programs. The focus is on providing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) that respond to the individual needs of the student in consultation with the parents and other professionals as needed.

Extension and Challenge

The school also caters for the students who are identified as talented and gifted. This through either the Primary Extension and Challenge(PEAC) program or the Talented and Gifted Students(TAGS) program. The PEAC program operates on an off-site, combined schools basis whilst the TAGS program is one developed throughout the school and co-ordinated by a Deputy Principal.

Information Technology

Leeming Primary School has an extensive Information, Communication and Technology program (ICT), which links classes to the library and lab. All classes have at least two computers connected to a school network and to the Internet to enhance learning. The administration is linked to Central Office for finance and demographic information and an emailing system.

The ultimate aim of the program is to integrate technology across the curriculum, where technology is used as a tool for learning. Our Web Page on the Internet is located at http://www.leeming.det.net.au

Science & Bushland Regeneration Project

Our grounds have pockets of natural bushland and we have been very active in keeping the bushland to ensure that only flora from this area is planted. A section of bushland has been fenced off and foreign plants removed and replanting of local plants carried out.

Along with this is the 'Sustainable Gardening' project that allows children to plant vegetables and companion plants. This is complimented with a permaculture program and the development of fish ponds to create a self sustaining cycle.

LEADERSHIP

Pastoral Care
A Pastoral Care Program operates within the school linked to the values underpinning the Curriculum Framework. Strategies include 'buddy classes' whereby a junior class and senior class are teamed up and they do various activities together. The senior children act as mentors and role models for the younger children.

Behaviour Management in Schools (BMIS)
Our BMIS policy covers rewards and consequences for behaviours among children. Duty of Care and respect is foremost in our dealings with children. Our duty of care is articulated through this policy along with Medical, Crisis Management, Risk Management and Playground Duty policies. We desire appropriate social skills which are highlighted and taught explicitly. Students are acknowledged and rewarded for demonstrating these behaviours.

Peer Mediators
Mediators are Year 6 and 7 children who complete a mediator's course with a trained teacher in Term 1. They are then rostered on at recess and lunch times to assist in helping children resolve conflicts in the playground.

Councillors
School Councillors are selected from the Year 7 group on a set time basis up to one term. They have particular responsibilities around the school. They set up and run assemblies, act as hosts to visitors, run the recycle paper collection program along with many other activities. These children are the leaders in the school and the younger children look up to them and aspire to be leaders in the future.

Sports Captains
There are six Faction Captains - two for each of the three houses: Swan, Canning and Murray. These children also have a leadership role in the school. Their responsibilities are mainly related to sport. However they run the recycle can collection program which allocates points to the Houses and funding to the Student Council. They also assist in running the sports shed at the lunch break, setting up for fitness, physical education and athletic carnivals. They also lead the school when we attend summer and winter sporting fixtures with neighbouring schools. These children are not necessarily the best at sport but display good sportsmanship and are responsible leaders.

Community Involvement
The parents are positively supportive of the school and take an active role through the School Council and Parents and Citizens Association (P&C). Through the P&C many extra innovative programs are initiated as well as much needed support to enhance the mainstream programs.

Formal parent involvement is through the Parents and Citizens Association and the Leeming School Council. The Council is a body of elected parents and teachers who set general policy directions for the school and select strategic priorities for school development planning.

Parents are also involved in various committees, eg. Grounds, Fundraising Committee, Safety House and Canteen.
