| THE COMMUNITY Latham Primary School is situated in the small town of Latham in the state's north eastern wheatbelt. The community is largely based around broad acre farming and sheep. A large number of students are from second-generation residents. Latham town site is named after Mr F A Latham, an early pastoralist of the region who established a watering place at Latham Rock in 1909, for stock being droved through the district. Latham is approximately 320 km north east of Perth, and boasts an 18 hole sand greens golf course, 4 supergrass tennis courts and a bowling green. All the sports are facilitated by very strong community support. The town also has a air conditioned Community Centre, with a children's playground and BBQ area adjacent, which supplements the Town Hall and licensed Golf & Bowling Club. Police, Shire and Library services are available weekly. Latham Primary School is the southern most school in the Midwest Education District, with the school situated 265 km south east of Geraldton, the site of the District Education Office. The school is in the unique position of being able to interact with schools of a similar size from the Midlands District for sporting, cultural and educational pursuits, as well as schools from the Midwest District. PHYSICAL RESOURCES The school consists of 3 separate, air-conditioned buildings, surrounded by attractive gardens. The main building consists of two classrooms, a pre primary work area, administrative area and a store room which houses the teaching resources. The site also comprises a staff room, library, sports shed and garden sheds. The gardens are well established and contain many shady trees and shrubs, along with colourful annuals and two large lawned areas that are well utilised for sports and play. The school also has a large bitumen area with basketball/netball rings for the children's use. The school operates two multi age grouping classes. The Kindergarten to Year 3's operate in one classroom with an adjoining room for the Kindergarten & Pre Primary students under the guidance of the Junior Room Teacher. The second classroom houses the Year 4 to 7 students. Both classrooms are large enough to enable all students to amalgamate and work in one room. The school is extremely well resourced for both students and teachers. The 2 classrooms have 7 Pentium computers networked and linked to the internet, backed up by a high powered server with CD burning capabilities, 2 multi purpose printers, digital camera and a wide range of educational software. The school has an extensive and comprehensive range of resources to support all key learning areas. In addition to these there is also a large range of audiovisual appliances in the school to assist the teaching staff in the delivery of diverse educational programs. The Library is fully automated and contains a large range of both fiction and non-fiction books, videos etc and these are being continually updated with the latest releases. The administrative section of the school is using the latest software technology with SIS Cash, Assets and Integris systems now fully operational. Two Pentium Computers and a server support this. The school is also supported by a dedicated staff, which, together with the Parents & Citizens Association and the School Council, work together to ensure the effective education of our students and the smooth running of all school operations.
