SCHOOL HISTORY
Kalgoorlie Primary School (KPS) is the oldest school in Kalgoorlie. It commenced operations in 1896 in an ironclad building. The school was rebuilt in 1897 out of stone blocks from the Boulder quarry. This was five years before the water pipeline came through to Kalgoorlie from Mundaring Weir. By 1901 there were 530 students attending the school.

KPS is located within the central business district. It is heritage listed and students have the unique opportunity of experiencing the old and new in a warm and safe family environment. Due to the history and traditions established at the school, third and fourth generations are enrolling their children.

NATURE OF OUR COMMUNITY
Enrolments hover between 425-440 students. There is a small but significant transience. KPS provides an inclusive environment for a diversity of students, comprising indigenous and non-indigenous, students with English as a second language (ESL), education support students, students with speech and language delay and students seeking academic challenge. There is a strong emphasis on pastoral care and values. KPS is supported by the 100 Schools Project to embed e-learning into classroom practice.

The community celebrates a climate where staff and parents work together. The school encourages collaborative learning and sharing. Students are engaged in a breadth of curriculum including specialist LOTE - (Indonesian) and The Arts, Physical Education and Library Studies.

KPS values positive relationships with students, staff, parent/caregivers and our wider community. It actively fosters parent/carer and community participation in the students' education. There is a strong School Council who work collaboratively with the principal and staff to achieve planned outcomes and enhance the school profile within the community.

As a Goldfields school, the staff encompass a range of experienced and graduate staff (1 - 30 years) and for the most part staff have remained at the school for an average period of 5 years. Staff provide a mix of expertise, compassion and care in a learning environment that encourages growth. All staff are encouraged and supported to adopt a collaborative approach to their roles and responsibilities and to embrace the principles of teaching and learning. Increased opportunities are promoted through the structure of Learning Teams. Each of the two Learning Teams (K-3 and 4-7) is led by a team leader. The Team Leaders foster collaborative teaching practice, moderation of professional judgement about student performance, professional development opportunities for team members, and support with Learning Team implementation of school strategic plans. Deputies share roles across curriculum and student services.
Non-teaching positions and roles in the school include a Registrar, School Officer, three Early Childhood Teacher Assistants, one Junior Primary Teacher Assistant, seven Special Needs Teacher Assistants, one Library Officer, one Bus Warden, and an Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (A.I.E.O.).

KPS is a family and community school celebrating inclusive practices in a happy, safe and supportive environment. Students are taught values and virtues through authentic learning experiences that will support resilience and stand them in good stead for active citizenship. Every year holds many celebratory key moments. Nevertheless the defining moment in any school year is quite individual. Everyone is encouraged to strive for personal and group excellence and in doing so, to know he/she is listened to and valued.
