Kalannie Primary School is situated in the northern central wheat belt 52 kilometres east of Dalwallinu and approximately 260 kilometres north east of Perth. Kalannie is predominantly a wheat and sheep farming community complemented by a small manufacturing industry that resides on the outskirts of town. There are about 200 people who live either in town or on farming properties. Town facilities include a very modern telecentre, town hall, several churches, caravan park, small general store, stock agencies and recreation club. The community is actively involved in a variety of traditional weekend sports that include football, netball, hockey, tennis and bowls. The township includes an Exclusive Brethren religious community. Their children attend Kalannie Primary School and on entering high school travel to Dalwallinu each day to attend their own independent school.

The school caters for students from Kindergarten to Year 7 and currently has 62 students enrolled from 42 families. Most of the students enrolled travel to school by bus and those that live in town, generally ride their bikes. There are 3 bus services that transport students to school each day. In addition, there is a daily bus service that transports high school students to and from the Dalwallinu District High School.

The school has a range of facilities in which 3 classes operate: a purpose built pre-primary accommodates kindergarten, pre-primary and year 1 students; a traditional linear building houses the year 2/3/4 and 5/6/7 classes along with an art room, library, teacher's work area and health support services room. A dedicated music room, also used for Languages teaching, is situated adjacent to the linear school building. All areas within the school are air conditioned and heated. The school in recent years has acquired a very modern administration area that has both a staff room and meeting room facility. There is also a large covered shade facility, various playing areas with a large playground that all students enjoy. Future school projects include upgrading the school library and school grounds.

Teaching at Kalannie is with small groups of students in multi aged arrangements. Although there is some variation from year to year, the school mostly offers a K/P/1, Year 2/3/4 and Year 5/6/7 class structure. Kindergarten students attend 2 full days per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students from Year 3-7 learn Japanese through a web based program delivered by Schools of Isolated and Distance Education. School computers are networked with the Year 2/3/4 and Year 5/6/7 class each having a laser printer, digital projector, promethean board and laptops in addition to at least 5 new desktop computers. Integration of computer technologies to improve student learning outcomes remains a focus area. Teaching staff use departmental software to plan, monitor and assess students along with recording lesson attendance and behaviour management information. School priorities for 2006 are the Students at Educational Risk strategy and Values Education. This policy has been collaboratively developed and is based on fostering a team relationship with the parents and students. Regularly reviews ensure student progress and support requirements are met. These priorities will extend into 2007.

Kalannie Primary School is supported by a number of specialist services. In addition to those offered by the District Office, there are also services that include the community health nurse, occupational therapy, speech therapy, institute for deaf education and the centre for inclusive schooling. These all operate out from a specialised area within the school.

An active and supportive P&C assist the school to improve student facilities including grounds and garden upgrades. The P&C organise a number of fund raising activities throughout the school year and also manage the school uniform shop. Parents, along with school staff, are also members of the School Council, Sports Committee, Bus Committee and Finance Committee. Their contributions and commitment to the school is highly valued. Community involvement in the school is high with parents and other community members freely giving of their time to support special school programs, sporting events, camps and fund raising.
