Compare with all other primary schools.
Located in an inner metropolitan suburb, Jolimont's similarity to a country school distinguishes it from other metropolitan schools. It is positioned on 2.5 hectares of well-tended grounds with two ovals and the only natural bushland in the City of Subiaco.

With its prominent position on Hay Street, the school has been a landmark in the area since 1905 serving the communities of Jolimont, Daglish and Floreat. In October 1891 John Henry Maddock subdivided the land where the school now stands. The subdivision was called the Jolimont Estate as part of the suburb of Subiaco.

Jolimont Primary first opened with one classroom and fifteen students and has grown steadily over the years to a current student population of approximately two hundred and thirty students. In its early years the school established a tradition of strong community interaction that is still evident today. A strong relationship exists between the school, the City of Subiaco and local community groups.

Over the years the school site has been developed to cater for the changing needs of the community. Classrooms are air-cooled enabling students to maintain the learning program even when there are extremes of temperatures. The students have access to recently constructed facilities including an assembly area and a modern canteen. Over the next twelve months there will be a $750 000 building upgrade with the construction of a new resource centre, administration area and upgraded toilet facilities. Three early childhood buildings have been constructed within the school grounds over the last ten years to cater for a significant increase in enrolment of early childhood students. This allows the school to provide an integrated K - 7 curriculum on the one site with the flexibility for students, staff and parents to collaborate and build partnerships.

Jolimont Primary provides students with a sense of belonging, purpose and civic responsibility. We foster a personal, friendly school community in which students are happy, confident and proud of their family, school and themselves. By virtue of its size, all students are known to each other and to the staff. It creates a very personal school tone and helps us to be aware of and develop the student's individual social, emotional and academic needs. Size, environment and tradition make Jolimont an ideal learning environment for students.

The school operates with a principal, deputy principal and twenty-five professional and dedicated staff. The friendly, personal atmosphere of Jolimont Primary reflects the caring and professional attitude of staff. The school is sought after and has attracted an experienced staff, many of whom live locally. Members of the non-teaching staff include a registrar, a library officer, primary and pre-primary educational assistants and a gardener/ handyman. The school has access to a nurse, welfare officer and school psychologist.

Members of staff are encouraged to adopt curriculum leadership across the school. There are organisational structures and resources in place to reflect this expectation. Teachers nominate to accept curriculum leadership roles in each of the eight learning areas. The nature of this role includes the promotion of the learning area, the purchase and management of resources, profiling of student outcomes and provision of professional learning in identified areas. Team leader roles have also been established to enhance the collaborative process already in place. The role of team leaders in each of the phases of schooling includes the dissemination of information, the facilitation of moderation meetings and the mentoring of new staff. There are high levels of academic achievement across all year levels. For example, in 2003 the WA literacy and Numeracy results in all areas tested were above the mean not only when compared with the rest of the state but also when compared with other schools with a similar demographic enrolment. The present professional profile provides specialist programs in Computer, Physical Education, Italian and support in the process strands

Jolimont Primary prides itself on its inclusive practices and the extent it values diversity. Programs are in place to meet the needs of students at risk, including the talented and gifted. Students are identified through collaboration with parents, observation and data collection including student work samples, state benchmark testing in literacy and numeracy and external assessments. Where a group of students is identified as being at risk, class based intervention programs are implemented. Education and behaviour management plans are developed for individual students identified at risk.

It is recognised that students need opportunities to engage in our rapidly changing technological society. The school has a strong focus on providing students with the skills to retrieve, process and present information using a range of screen based technologies. A specialist teacher provides support for staff to use technology as an effective tool in the learning program. Each class has access to computers linked to the Internet and there is a bank of computers in the Resource Centre. The school web page is regularly updated. It includes student work and information about the school including the celebration of special events, the Annual School Report, planning for school improvement, the school handbook and the fortnightly newsletter. To facilitate improved communication, parents may choose to have newsletters and information updates emailed to their home or work.

Jolimont Primary encourages and values a high level of community involvement and participation. It has an active Parents and Citizens Association and School Council. Over the last four years the P&C has air cooled all the classrooms, constructed an outstanding playground in the primary grounds, improved the resources and learning environment in the early childhood centre and provided almost $20 000 of resources for the library. The Jolimont School Council consists of five community and four staff members. It meets frequently to make important strategic planning decisions and to deal with any issues impacting on the school.

The future of Jolimont is exciting. In 2005 the school will celebrate its centenary. It will be a time to reflect on the traditional, complemented with modern, recently built facilities and a curriculum to meet the needs of students in a rapidly changing society. An indication of the fond memories and pride many ex students have for Jolimont is the outstanding response to the centenary celebrations with over 870 ex students registering to participate in the celebrations next year.

With its supportive school community, Jolimont Primary should continue to provide an outstanding educational environment for families in the area.
