School Overview

Hopetoun Primary School is a new Level 4 Primary School situated in the seaside town of Hopetoun on the south coast of the state. Hopetoun is approximately 50km south of Ravensthorpe and 200kms west of Esperance. The population of the town is approximately one thousand one hundred (1,100) and continues to grow. The town's development is surging due to the Ravensthorpe Nickel Operation which is close by.

School Grounds and Buildings

The School was officially opened in mid 2007 and has been in operation since January 2007. The grounds are extensive with gardens developing. A series of organic gardens, tended by students, are planted within the School grounds. The School has an agreement with the local Shire for the use of the town oval which shares its boundary with the School. The School also has a multi purpose court which is marked for tennis, volleyball, basketball and netball and can be used for a variety of other sporting activities. The undercover area is a part of the main area of the school, and links up with phase 2 of the School's development. Phase 2 is a future development. The School's main buildings are sandstone and blue in colour and depict the sand and ocean which is in close proximity. The buildings have state of the art facilities including wireless networks, collegiate areas and shared wet areas.

There are two designated Early Childhood teaching areas, general classroom areas and a double transportable which has the School's developing library and a teaching area.

Students

The School opened in 2007 with 119 students the majority of which were linked to the construction phase of the nearby mine. The School commenced 2008 with 131 students but this quickly rose to 157 within the first week. As the mine moves into production phase the student numbers have settled around the 145 mark. These numbers will continue to rise as the 'fly in fly out' aspect of the mine decreases.

The majority of student numbers are in the Kindergarten to Year 3 area. Approximately 30% of the numbers are in the Years 4 to 7 area.

Staff

The School is developing its own culture and this is due to the committed staff of 2007 and 2008. Current staffing is 9.0 FTE. A Principal, Deputy Principal (with a 0.5 FTE teaching load) and seven Staff along with a Registrar (0.9 FTE), School Officer (0.2 FTE), four part time Education Assistants and a Library Officer (0.2 FTE) make up our staffing complement. The demonstrated capacity of the staff to work as a cohesive team provides not only high level achievement but stability and security for all children at the school. The staff are receptive, responsive and proactive to new educational developments, initiatives and practices.

Community

As the School is relatively new the community support has been outstanding. Parents assist the School in many levels from running the Uniform Shop, Fundraising, helping at busy bees, running the book committees and developing policy and procedures through the P & C and School Council.

The School offers a stimulating learning environment and this is assisted by the generosity of BHP Billiton and its employees.

Special programs in the School include Instrumental Music, Physical Education (includes Active Afternoon Sport) and LOTE (via online learning). Sporting programs include Interm Swimming, Jump Rope for Heart and Athletics (Inter and Intra School).

Information technology is a high profile learning area in the School. Students are exposed to and participate in a variety of learning technologies through a focus on integration to classroom activities. The School has a portable trolley with 24 Notebooks on it that links to a series of Interactive Whiteboards, Data Projectors and the Internet. Each teaching area also has access to approximately 40 personal computers that are utilized across the School.

The School's values and beliefs are developing but mirror the Plan for Public Schools 2008 - 2011 and the Curriculum Framework and are also complemented by the Virtues Project which is integrated into each classroom.

Overall:
Excellent staff and teachers, lovely encouraging atmosphere for children. Well supported by local community.Education dept didnt listen to local community consultation and school is very exposed to high winds. Undercover area to small for number of children at school. Garden put in was inapproriate, trees havent grown and it looks awful. School has been full since it opened in Jan 2007 and there has been no confirmation on building stage 2 of the school. One demountable has been bought in and another ordered. As no high school in town, families tend leave when eldest in high school, so not many children in upper primary school.Fantastic school due to highly committed staff and a hardworking core of parents and community members.

Overall:
Committed friendly staff, great facilities for isolated town eg IT, sport and educational equipment. Open policy for discussions with parents and commnity members. Busy and energetic P and C. Fantastic uniforms that are worn by all students and on special occasions staff, too.Poorly designed undercover area - only large area that can accomodate all students and families for assemblies or other gatherings - no walls in a town that has wind that can and does come from all directions. No parking or planning for parking - poor actual parking by parents, too.My children have been at the school since its inception and they and we have been more than happy with the standard of education and input that the staff and community have had. Sadly poor planning (and lack of listening to locals) has resulted in some structural deficiencies and even though the school is ever growing there is apperntly no plans by the Ed Dept to start building phase 2 just keep adding differing looking transportable buildings.

Overall:
A small school where old fashioned decent behaviour and respect are promoted. Teachers know all the students by name, and there is a real fealing of community. For the most part, teachers and staff are highly committed.Early childhood teacher of questionable motivation who treats the job as "just a job", generally lacking in enthusiasm or organisation, with little purpose in her teaching.Highly disappointed that BHP has let this small community down, and the detrimental affect the mine closure has had on the school which has devistated this small school and the local community.
