| The Helena Valley Progress Association was instrumental in establishing the school and the first students were enrolled at the beginning of 1927. When it was officially opened on the 6 May 1927 the school was referred to as South Greenmount School. Locals objected strongly to this title and requested the name be changed to its present name of Helena Valley Primary School. The current enrolment (Feb 2005) is 340, including 37 Pre-Primary and 40 Kindergarten students. The school staff comprises of a Principal, two Deputy Principals, two level 3 teachers and six senior teachers. There are currenlty 17 teachers and 13 non-teaching staff appointed to the school. A feature of the school has always been its rural atmosphere and this has been largely retained, ensuring that the present Helena Valley Primary School has the benefits of a natural setting and solid community values. There is strong parental and community support for the school and parents are provided with regular opportunities to be involved in school events and programs. The Parents & Citizens Association is actively involved in fundraising, student services and child safety initiatives and the School Council plays a valuable role in school decision-making and policy development. All eight learning areas of the curriculum are catered for and teachers are actively engaged in the Curriculum Improvement Program. The Curriculum Framework and the Plan For Government Schools 2004-2007 underpin the teaching and learning in our school. Collaborative team-teaching, negotiated curriculum, integrated learning and higher order thinking skills are some of the innovative practices included in the learning program. Information and Communication Technology is integrated into most curriculum areas and the school's computer network is well utilised. Specialist programs are provided in Italian, Music and Physical Education. Academically talented students have the opportunity to be involved in the Primary Extension and Challenge program (PEAC) and Junior Extension for Talented Students (JETS) program. Students are provided with many artistic and cultural experiences through the Instrumental Music Program (Guitar), choir, social dance lessons, art displays and competitions, excursions and visiting performers. Sport features in the school with students involved in athletics, swimming, football, netball, cricket, tee-ball, volleyball, soccer and chess. Many children competed in interschool competitions. In 2003 the new administration building and staffroom were completed, providing parents and staff with a modern, functional and aesthetically pleasing office environment. | ||||
