| Hawker Park Primary School is nestled amongst beautiful natural bushland, manicured lawns, native gardens and trees. The school has its own large, grassed oval, netball/basketball courts and is adjacent to a community oval and parkland. Students are housed in comfortable, clean, well-furnished and equipped, air-conditioned classrooms. The school boasts purpose built Pre-Primary and Kindergarten centres, a purpose built Arts block catering for Art/Craft and Music and a fully equipped library. Opened in 1982 as a Level 5 School by Foundation Principal Lou Moran, the catchment area of this northern suburbs school in Warwick is contained by Warwick and Beach roads, the Mitchell Freeway and Erindale Road. The original area was the 'Springvale Estate' development. Despite research, there appears to be no significance in the origin of the name 'Hawker'. Enrolment currently stands at 215 students from Kindergarten to Year 7 The school is computerised with all learning areas having two fully functioning and equipped computers and the library has a full range of computers for search and research. All teaching blocks are networked with Internet access. A small computer laboratory has been established. The Arts are a large focus in the school's curriculum. The comprehensive music programme brings a variety of experiences to children from Years 1 - 7, such as movement, singing, playing instruments and listening and experimenting with music. Interested and able Year 6's and 7's have access to specialist instrumental tuition in flute, clarinet, trumpet, baritone, trombone and percussion. These instruments combine to make up the school band, which plays at assemblies and on other special occasions throughout the year. The choir is voluntary and comprised of interested Year 5, 6 and 7 students and performs at retirement villages, shopping centres, competitions, Winthrop Hall at the University of Western Australia, school assemblies and other special events. The school also provides comprehensive instruction, and immersion, in the language and culture of Indonesia through a specialist language programme. An experienced and enthusiastic staff provide a wide range of expertise, assisting our students to develop creative, academic, social, physical and life skills to their full potential, enabling them to become confident and effective members of the community. The staff of the school recognises the wide range of interests and abilities of our children. Students are catered for through a comprehensive support, intervention and enrichment program. In the senior part of the school there is opportunity for students to be involved in school operations, or to become a School Student Councillor. The school encourages excursions and visitors to enhance the learning program. Year Seven students enjoy an annual camp to Pemberton. The school celebrates the maturing of students and their subsequent movement to secondary education through an annual Graduation Christmas Concert, and a Year Seven Luncheon at the Sheraton Hotel, Perth. The standard of student involvement and behaviour is high. The school has a system of Pastoral Care and discipline which focuses on rewarding positive behaviours with clear consequences for negative behaviours. Direct parent contact is part of this system at the classroom, school and playground level. Hawker Park Primary School has an enthusiastic School Council which meets regularly to assist in the school's direction and management and an active and dedicated Parents and Citizens' Association. There are well-established and supported, Fundraising, Canteen, Safety House and Grounds Committees and a Community Watch program. Hawker Park Primary School's motto, 'Together We Grow,' epitomises students, staff and parents working together in a spirit of cooperation and teamwork. | ||||
