| Halidon Primary School was established in 1986 and is located in the suburb of Kingsley, some 17 kilometres north of Perth. Students and staff are comfortably accommodated in attractive and well designed buildings set amongst pleasant landscaped gardens. Facilities include an enclosed undercover area (air cooled), canteen, gardeners lunchroom and workshop, art/craft room (with a kiln), three activity centres, library and music room, computer laboratory in addition to 12 classroom teaching areas, the air cooling of which was completed during 2003. The classrooms are grouped in blocks with each having an internal practical area. The classroom blocks are arranged around a paved courtyard area. A comprehensive Information Technology network connects every teaching area to the computer laboratory and a network server, providing all classes with internet access, internal e-mail access, access to the library information database and access to software available via the computer laboratory. The Halidon school community works actively together to promote Halidon as an establishment promoting the highest ideals of learning and social interaction. The school community aspire to making Halidon PS a warm, friendly, welcoming school where manners, behaviour and dress standards are regarded as important. The Halidon community highly regards - -the development of creativity. -co-operation and supportiveness between staff, students and parents as worthwhile qualities to be encouraged. At all times the school community encourages frank and open discussion to promote understanding of and commitment to our common goals. SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT The purpose of Halidon Primary School is; -to provide the opportunity for students to develop cognitive abilities and skills to their full potential. -to develop children's social, physical and creative skills and abilities. TEACHING STAFF The school is staffed by experienced teachers with and average length of service at Halidon PS of 9.5 years. All teachers are permanent. Seven teachers have A.S.T. (Advanced Skills Teacher) status with more becoming eligible in the near future. There are numerous leadership opportunities for staff at Halidon PS, with A.S.T. teachers undertaking additional responsibilities and other teachers also being involved in organization, planning and curriculum support. The school community is fiercely proud of the outstanding quality of teachers available to students attending Halidon Primary School. During 2002 three of the teaching staff were nominated by parents for a National Edeucation InitiativeiTeaching Awards Award. In 2004 one of the teachers received an ASG medal for service to the school community and another teacher was nominated for the Premier's Teacher Award! NON-TEACHING STAFF Non-teaching staff make a sizeable contribution, either directly or indirectly, to the school's teaching and learning programs. The non-teaching team includes: Registrar, School Officer, School Officer (library), Kindergarten and Pre Primary Education Assistants, Junior Primary Education Assistant, Special Needs Educational Assistants, School Psychologist, Gardener / Handyperson and School Nurse (one half day per week). An innovation for 2003 was the appointment of a Community Liaison Officer, funded by the Churches Commission through a joint submission by Halidon, Goollelal, Creaney and Dalmain Primary Schools. The school actively promotes and encourages parent participation and involvement in the life of the school. A summary of the relevant highlights in 2003 follows: -Outstanding support for the school from the Parents and Citizens' Association was again forthcoming during 2003. The P&C raised sufficient funds to complete the air cooling of all teaching blocks. -The P&C hosted a lavish National Teachers Day morning tea as a show of their support for the great work undertaken by the staff. -The Book-club was successfully organised by a band of willing helpers, contributing many hundreds of dollars of new books to the library in the process. -A committee comprising parents and teachers undertook a comprehensive review of the Behaviour Management in Schools Policy, to be adopted in 2004. -A committee comprising parents and teachers was successful with their submission to the Cancer Council of Western Australia for Halidon Primary School to become a Sun Smart School -The School Council deliberated on setting a schedule of Contributions and Charges for 2004 -(under provisions in the School Education Act 1999) endorsed continuation of the early closure timetable for 2004 and reviewed the BMIS Policy. PASTORAL CARE The school's pastoral care programs are based on providing support for students to enable effective learning in classrooms. Students are progressively encouraged to take on more responsibility for their learning, with the support of teachers and ancillary staff. Our Community Liaison Officer plays a key role in supporting the schools pastoral care program which extends to students, staff and their families. SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS Examples of support programs for students follow: -Talented and Gifted students in Years 5-7 were catered for with a mix of in/out of school extension programs. -Substantial resources were provided from the School Budget were offered within the school and creative human resource management strategies were implemented to support SAER initiatives. -Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students with special needs in specific learning areas were prepared by teachers on a needs basis. -Teachers are of the strong view that multi-age class groupings should be of major consideration for 2004. | ||||
