| Grovelands Primary School caters for children from PP-7. Children attending the school in 2006 have access to a comprehensive and inclusive curriculum. The catchment area of the school includes the suburbs of Westfield and Kelmscott. The school population comprises a number of different nationalities. Approximately 12a0of the school population are Aboriginal. The school has embraced the Multi-Age Grouping structure with all classes created to support looping, a program which generally ensures that students work with the same group of children and teacher for more than one year. Children identified as Education Support are taught in an inclusive structure from PP-7. Parents are welcome at the school at all times and are represented by the P&C and School Council. This small group of industrious workers has completed a number of significant projects. The School Council consists of parents and staff representatives and plays a significant role in determining future directions for the school. The council is also instrumental in the ongoing cultural awareness programs that are a part of school life. The P&C also provides an active and supportive voice. The school has welcomed a Parent Support Coordinator who meets with parents each week in an informal and supportive manner. School staff have a range of teaching experiences and skills and these are utilised across the school with LOTE (Japanese PP-7), Music, Computer, Library, GiR (Getting it Right - Literacy), LSC (Learning Support Coordinator) and SAER (Students at Educational Risk) programs being implemented across the school. Special importance has been placed on SAER with the Commonwealth Literacy and Numeracy Project providing the school wide support needed to identify, track and support children who are identified as being 'at risk'. Students are further supported by a comprehensive support program, which includes Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers (AIEOs), Junior Primary Assistants, Special Needs Assistants, Education Assistants and a variety of Support Teachers. A collaborative, problem solving approach across the school means that on site expertise is utilised to the maximum as teachers support each other to offer appropriate student centred programs. Grovelands has embraced the Habits of Mind program, a collection of 16 dispositions which successful people need to employ. These Thinking Skills are addressed in all classes and supported across the school with a range of other initiatives. The community and staff combine each year in a productive and positive manner to ensure that Grovelands Primary School continues to work towards its goal of 'Striving to Excel'. | ||||
