History and Context
The Glen Huon school community is made up predominantly of young families moving into newly built homes in the rapidly expanding Eaton who live within close proximity of the school. During the 1990s the community showed strong support for a new school in the rapidly growing East Eaton area to relieve the congestion at Eaton Primary School. The Minister for Education made an announcement early in 1999 that a new school would be built, to open in 2000. The inaugural Principal for Glen Huon, Ms Carolyn Nankervis was appointed in September 1999. The school opened in February 2000 with approximately 180 students, 12 teaching staff (including Principal and Associate Principal), school administrator and support staff. Students and staff were initially located in temporary buildings at Eaton Primary School. The school moved into its newly completed buildings during the July 2000 holidays. During 2000 the initial staff and community undertook a great deal of work to establish the school as a first class facility striving for excellence in education. By February 2005 the school had grown to 430 students from K-6 with 27 teachers, including the Principal and two Deputy Principals, School Registrar and 20 support staff.

School Profile and Priorities
Glen Huon Primary School currently caters for students from Kindergarten to Year 6 and includes an Intensive Learning Centre (ESU). In 2003 the new Eaton Community College opened, catering for middle school students from Year 7, 8, 9 and10. Glen Huon now enrols students from K-6. 2002 was the last year that year 7 students were enrolled at Glen Huon. As a Local Management School we are constantly examining our approaches to improve our teaching, learning, leading and management processes. All staff are proficient users of information and communications technology with on-line access to servers, which connect to our intranet, internet, SIS modules and automated library software to enable students and staff to research, communicate and desktop publish. The buildings include twelve primary teaching areas, five purpose-built early childhood centres (including two new ECE transportables), specialist rooms for visual and performing arts, Information Centre, Intensive Learning Centre (ESU), Community Centre, modern café and community room with IT access to all teaching and staff areas. A purpose built Dental Health Centre adjoins the School Administration Centre. The school grounds are landscaped and reticulated. A unique on-site wetland has been partially retained and is cared for as part of the school's environmental education focus, through our 'Eco Village Project' with the emphasis on, the 5Rs: reduce, re-use, recycle, rehabilitate and relationships. All classes participate in hands on recycling, composting, worm farms, tree planting, herb gardens, vege growing and looking after our chickens in our Eco Village through an and enquiry based, student-centred, thinking skills curriculum. Our Thinking Curriculum K-6 was launched in 2004 along with our Eco Village Modules.

Glen Huon has three teaching blocks: Early Learning, Middle Learning and Senior Learning. Staff work collaboratively in their learning area teams to share teaching talents, skills, experience and expertise. Teaching staff also work together across K-6 for CIP2 and priority projects.

Our school priorities are Literacy (with a focus on the four roles of the reader), Numeracy and environmental education focussing on outcomes for Active Citizenship and promoting values of ecological sustainability contained in Society and Environment. In 2004 Glen Huon won a Regional Ribbons Of Blue Schools Award recognizing achieving excellence in environmental education for 'being consistently committed to investigating ways to improve and restore the school Wetland'. In 2003 we commenced the implementation of the Literacy Net and Numeracy Net. We have had a GIR Numeracy Specialist teacher since 2002. In August 2004 Glen Huon won an Achievement Award in National Literacy and Numeracy Week for outstanding practises and achievements for a whole school approach to Numeracy. In 2005 our focus has been on literacy with a major strategy being implementation of the Co-operative Reading Program.

Our Building Inclusive Schools Priority includes a whole school approach to Behaviour Management, Social Skills and Values Development. All staff at Glen Huon will have completed the Behaviour Management and Discipline Training by the end of 2006 with all teaching staff having had the opportunity to complete the training and the coaching in 2005.

Our Senior Learning Students participate in our Circus skills program and enjoy presenting to our school Gatherings. In 2003 we achieved our target of acquiring a whole class set of guitars. We are keen to encourage staff and students to learn to play guitar and to perform for our school community at every opportunity. In 2005 a music specialist was appointed to promote music with the emphasis on singing and guitar and performing at our fortnightly School Gatherings.
