| Gibbs Street Primary School opened in 1972 on the site which was known locally as 'Western's Dairy'. The East Cannington area was originally semi-rural and had many horse properties. Western's Dairy was well known in the area and the significance of the School's origin has been continued by the maintenance of the Western Family's home on the School site, now known as 'Western House'. The house has been used for many years as a before and after school child care centre, which closed in 2003. The School developed a plan to convert the home into an Arts Centre for use by the School and the local community in the evenings. The conversion was completed in 2005 and in 2006 commenced to be used for Art and the base for a Cell ESL program. The finished Centre is an excellent facility for the School. The original school construction in 1972 was of one cluster, which was increased by a second cluster, library and administration block in the early 1980's. In 1994 the School had a second pre-primary centre built, with a Kindy centre in 2002. In 1997 the School's Administration block was upgraded. The School's enrolment has hovered around the 400 mark for a number of years. The area surrounding the School is undergoing significant upgrade, with a result that older homes on large blocks are being demolished to be replaced by smaller home units on smaller blocks. As yet, this has not translated into increased enrolments, but is likely to in the future. The residential area, Maniana, which borders the School, is to be fully redeveloped. The School joined the initial trial of Schools in Local Merit Selection in 1997 and considers the outcomes to have provided significant gains to the School. The selection of some high quality staff has resulted in improved social and academic outcomes. The staff now includes expertise in English, Maths, Science and Physical Education. The School places great emphasis on early intervention and the accommodation of children with special needs. The School has developed its organisational structures to ensure children are identified in Pre-primary and Year One as requiring intervention. The School is now able to offer considerable expertise in this area. Two unique programs offered at the School are ACES (academic extension) and SHARE (early intervention and parent support). Both programs have added depth to the School's curriculum and are highly regarded by all parents. The School was also successful in gaining a grant through the Active Ageing Program in 2005 and a very successful program commenced in 2006, to increase the involvement of seniors in the community, into the School's programs. The School is developing a successful Sister School relationship with a School in Padang, West Sumatra. In 2003 staff from Gibbs Street visited the Sister School, Dedikasi Edukasi Kualiva (DEK) and in 2004 staff from DEK visited Gibbs Street. The School offers Indonesian as its LOTE and the Sister School Project reinforces the quality of the School's LOTE. The School also has a successful history of involvement with international programs based at Curtin University. In 2005 and 2006 the School hosted student education teachers from Hong Kong completing English immersion programs. | ||||
