| Gairdner Primary School is a small rural school, surrounded by peaceful native vegetation in the heart of the south coastal farmland. The school is located next to the Fitzgerald Biosphere/National Park, 145km east of Albany, just off the main highway with the closest town Jerramungup located 32km to the northwest. Gairdner Primary School has a catchment area of approximately a 35km radius. Three buses service Gairdner Primary School, one of which provides a shuttle service to the nearest large centre of Jerramungup and our feeder District High School for secondary students. The students at Gairdner are predominately from farming backgrounds or come from families employed in the local agricultural industry. STAFFING at Gairdner Primary School is made up chiefly of members of the local community; thus the school has strong links with the SCHOOL COMMUNITY and community organizations. Events that take place during the year which involve our school community are our Lightning Carnival (involving 6 schools), Fun Run, Athletics Carnival and a Swimming Carnival. Our staff have been nominated for Excellence in Teaching Awards. School decisions are made collaboratively between teachers and the School Council and School Community consultation. Gairdner Primary School has a three CLASS STRUCTURE that comprises a total enrolment of forty-six students. The junior class area has its own playground for the Kindy to year one students. Our classes are multi aged groupings, which are small and supportive allowing for individual differences and inclusive collaborative group work. Our SHARED VISION is to use teaching practices and values which ensure students have equitable access to learning. All our planning and activities aim to develop engaged individual and collaborative thinkers. We work to help students develop and grow as whole individuals in a caring and supportive environment where they can contribute to and participate in their community and society in general. OUR STUDENTS like their school because: 'we have extension groups, special teaching and can work independently and in collaborative groups. We enjoy cooperative reading and the peer pair programme'. Our students helped write our school behaviour management policy by writing their own rights and responsibilities. Gairdner School offers SPECIALISED PROGRAMMES in Dance, Gymnastics and Circus. We entered the Wakakirri (Australian Primary Story Dance) and won a Community Spirit Award and Distinction in Story Dance in 2003. We work hard to develop critical and creative thinking and also offer a well planned learning support programme which includes students at educational risk, primary extension and challenge and talented and gifted children. Our school has a STUDENT COUNCIL made up of year 7 students who fundraise, organise our ANZAC service, the annual presentation evening and also offer peer support to junior students. Our parents/caregivers are very satisfied with their schools learning programmes, the friendly and supportive staff and 'open-door' environment. Many suggest that our school is like 'one big happy family' who are 'involved in decisions and invited to participate'. | ||||
