| Edney Primary School was opened in 1989 and is situated in the suburb of High Wycombe. It is one of two government schools in the suburb with a student enrolment of 433 for the opening of 2008 school year. A strong sense of community exists within the suburb and this is reflected in the extent to which parents and students are involved in the school and the wider community activities. It has close links with other foothills communities including Kalamunda, Forrestfield and Maida Vale. The staff comprises Principal, two Deputy Principals, 23 classroom teachers, 3 specialist teachers, a registrar, a school officer, a library officer, an Aboriginal Education Officer, 10 education assistants and a gardener. The staff has highly experienced practitioners and one new graduate all of whom bring a special commitment to student learning. The whole school focuses on a collaborative team model in planning for continuous improvement. The Curriculum encompasses a broad range of learning areas where students engage both individually and cooperatively in learning units which ensure achievement of appropriate outcomes. Art, LOTE (Italian), and Physical Education all enjoy a high profile through specialist programs. The school has 16 classrooms, 4 early childhood centres (for Kindergarten and Pre-Primary) and a central specialist services block containing rooms for music, art, library and Dental Clinic facilities. Each teaching block contains a cluster of four classrooms constructed in pairs to facilitate collaborative practice. The two pairs of rooms share an adjacent activity area with cooking facilities. To facilitate the use of learning technologies, an up to date, school wide network supports classroom computers as well as a bank of 8 computers in each block. A Learning Technologies Coordinator supports the technical aspect in the school and a Learning With ICT Coordinator has recently been appointed to support staff in the use of ICT in the classroom to enhance learning. Adjacent to the school is a community recreation complex including a recreation centre and significant playing fields which the school has priority access to during the school day. Edney has a School Council with 10 parent representatives, 1 community representative, 3 staff representatives as well as the Principal. Meetings are held at least once per term and decisions are made using a consensus-based approach. Each representative group uses its network to gain views on issues to be discussed and decisions to be made. There is a strong Behaviour Management and Anti-Bullying Policy which supports the theory of restoration of good behaviour through student reflection, Peer Mediators, time-out, think tank and a Friendship Club. Edney engages in continuous reflection in order to ensure good practice is achieved and student-learning outcomes are maximised consistent with its stated purpose to: 'enhance each student's academic, social, creative, physical and personal development, thereby enabling them to fulfil their potential and contribute to the development of society.' | ||||
