Located 35 km west of Moora and 170 km north of Perth, Dandaragan Primary School (Population 73) is situated on spacious, well presented grounds. These feature very attractive lawns and gardens, complimented with recreational areas such as oval, adventure playgrounds and basketball court managed by a Gardener/Handyperson (20 hrs/wk) and a Cleaner (15 hrs/wk).

Of the 73 students, 40 travel on three separate buses (North, South, West) from surrounding farms, distances ranging from 35 kms to 3 kms from the school. The rest of the students reside within the townsite, which provides extended sport and recreational facilities, a library and a general store and several small businesses servicing the surrounding population. It has an extremely strong community spirit which nurtures the students.

Our school believes that its purpose is to fully develop the intellectual, social and physical abilities of the children ensuring each has a flexible attitude towards applying these skills as well as becoming contributing, responsible citizens. The challenge 'Be The Best You Can Be.' provides the best motivation for each child when striving to achieve these goals.

Staff, students, parents and the wider community believe in a co-operative team approach - which provides the children with every opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of academic, cultural and sporting experiences that reduces the perceived disadvantage of being a small isolated rural school.

The school's teaching staff has seen some change in recent years. The students have been able to develop excellent student/teacher rapport that has resulted in very positive attitudes towards schooling. The school currently has a principal, three full time teachers and four part-time teachers to make the total FTE. Two Teacher Assistants work with the pre-primary children, one full time and one part time. An AIEO works part time with the aboriginal students.

The school has a well resourced automated library and this is managed by a Library Aide (0.05 FTE). Our school Registrar (0.77) has access to an administrative computer, loaded with Integris.plus other administrative programs.

The school was connected to the Internet in 1997 every room has its own connection to this worldwide resource.

We provide experiences in each of the eight learning areas - Arts, English, Health and Physical Education, Mathematics, Science, Studies of Society and Environment, LOTE, Technology and Enterprise - incorporating the most recent teaching practices wherever possible. A feature of the school is the Technology and Enterprise Learning Centre, funded by the parents and Citizens body. It allows students access to tools, storage and space to expand the scope of their work in this area. Our LOTE program involves the Year 2 to 7children learning Indonesian which is delivered weekly by a supervised untrained teacher. A satellite dish has been installed to enable students to view Westlink as well as ABC, WIN and GWN channels. Student learning in these subject areas is enhanced with school excursions and student networking days. Every third year the Senior Room children are taken on a week's camp, which is designed to broaden their view of WA beyond Dandaragan.

With parent and community support the teaching staff are able to enter the students into the annual performing arts festival and get them involved in interschool sporting events that occur each year.

Since 1996 the school has received funding through the Priority Country Areas Program which has further enhanced the resources provided at the school, as well as increasing the opportunities for children to attend a wide range of cultural and sporting presentations when they visit the district

The school has a very supportive P & C association that regularly contributes towards the provision of library, reading and sporting resources as well as the on-going upgrading of computer hardware in each room. They provide help with the establishment and maintenance of the grounds and assist with projects and sporting events run by the school. The P & C has been successful in receiving funding from Investing in our schools (DEST) in order to establish a new library/ resource building in 2006.

A School Council (established as the school management committee) has been in place since 1988. Its current role is the result of continuous evolution as the parents become more aware of the increasing opportunities available for them to become involved with decision making. Their knowledge of current Education strategies and outcomes allows them to provide valuable assistance.

We believe that by exposing our students to this wide range of experiences and our continual striving for excellence we are providing the elements of quality primary education.
