| Dampier is a coastal town located 1600 km north of Perth and 20km from the regional centre of Karratha. Dampier Primary School was established in 1967 due to the development of Hamersley Iron's operations in the area. The school population is relatively stable with an enrolment of 200 students (K - 7). Student numbers are dependent on Pilbara Iron employment strategies and the availability of housing, but generally there is little transience. The school is a two storey building with all primary classes upstairs and separate Pre-Primary and Kindergarten buildings. The school has a new Administration building, new undercover assembly area, purpose built canteen, Art/Science room, Music room and a Library/Resource room. The school grounds are well maintained and include extensive playing areas and playground equipment. The school is able to offer specialist programmes in Music, Physical Education and LOTE. Selected students in Years 5 - 7 are involved in PEAC and other year levels have the opportunity to participate in a school-based TAGS programme. Dampier has been a Local Select School since 1999. This has ensured the merit selection of professional and highly motivated staff. Typically, staff remain at the school for several years with a small, annual turnover. Many staff members have worked at Dampier for a number of years. Parent support at Dampier Primary School is very high. There is a strong emphasis on learning partnerships in the school and parents are actively encouraged to involve in their child's 'learning journey'. Parents and caregivers play a key role in the education of their children and we believe that students achieve their potential when there is a strong partnership between all stakeholders - child, teacher and parent. The school is commited to maintaining strong relationships between staff, students and parents. A supportive and hard working P&C meets monthly, with its main fundraising event being an annual Twilight Fete. In 2005 the profits from the Fete were in excess of $26,000. These funds will be used to provide the school with extra funds to support learning programmes and improve facilities in the school. Further indications of parental support are: * All students wear school uniform * 100a0payment of school contributions and charges * High rates of attendance at school events e.g. Bush Dances, Open Nights, Twilight Sports Carnivals, etc. The school operates with an open and inclusive approach to decision making. The School Council comprises 5 elected parent representatives, 3 elected staff representatives and the principal. The School Council usually meets once per term and is active in reviewing and developing policy and assisting in setting school priorities and directions. Currently under review are the school's Homework and Behaviour Management in Schools policies. The teaching staff at our school is a dedicated and extremely hard working group of committed professionals, who are striving to plan for improvement based on the different needs of individual students. Teachers are using the Curriculum Framework and the Outcomes and Standards Framework to develop teaching and learning programs which will equip all of the children at Dampier Primary School with the knowledge, skills, understandings, attitudes and values they will need to lead successful lives in the twenty-first century. | ||||
