| Como Primary is an inner suburban school that is in close proximity to the Swan River. It was opened in 1916. The school itself is a traditional U-shaped brick and tile building and is fully air-conditioned. The grounds have been pleasantly landscaped, with grassed areas, gardens and shady trees. There are nine classrooms; a music room, a purpose built library; a transportable pre-primary building; a hall that houses the canteen and a multi-purpose room used for ESL support lessons as well as a uniform shop. A disused brick out building has now been converted into an Art Studio. Como PS parents are very supportive of the school. There is a School Council and an active P&C association and parent body who under take such tasks as: running the uniform shop, school canteen, providing PMP assistance and providing support in the classrooms. Local businesses and past students are also most supportive of our school. The students at Como Primary School have a positive attitude to school, they are confident, articulate and self-motivated. Student behaviour is generally very good. Our 'Whole of School' Managing Student Behaviour program places the onus on students who do misbehave to 'own their behaviour'. This together with an active anti-bullying policy makes Como a safe and happy environment in which to learn. Our staff consists of very experienced, dedicated teachers who are working together to provide our students with the best possible education for the 21 Century. School administrators are very positive about the Department of Education and Training changes and fully support their staff in planning, delivering and monitoring student work in terms of the Curriculum Framework and Student Outcomes. Technology is progressive with a bank of 20 networked wireless notebook computers being available for class use. Each classroom also has between three and seven PCs while the Library/Resource Centre has a further fifteen computers, all of which are networked. Special Programs available at Como Primary School include: Perceptual Motor Program for PP-Year 2 students, LOTE French Years 3-7, PEAC, the whole of school Virtues Program, Como Foreshore Regeneration Program run in conjunction with the South Perth City Council and our School Buddy program. The Arts are well catered for with both an Art and a Music specialist. Our choir performs with distinction at various venues. Our Human Rights program was the first of its kind in Australia and is now being trialled in other schools. School leadership is encouraged with prefects and school captains performing important roles in the everyday life of the school. Our Motto is 'Only Our Best' and this is well reflected in all areas of school life at Como Primary School. | ||||
