| The Collier Primary School catchment area is bounded by the Canning Highway to the west, Saunders Street to the south, Douglas Avenue to the North and Hayman Road to the east. Teaching staff are very experienced and committed to the education of children. Administration staff includes a Deputy Principal and Principal. The early childhood centre and junior classes also have access to teacher assistant support. The school curriculum covers the eight learning areas and the Arts (music) has been a strength at Collier for many years. The school usually forms a choir / recorder ensemble which performs at various functions such as the W.A. Government Schools Music Society's Burswood Concert and has instrumental instruction in flute and clarinet for selected senior students. A part time Art Specialist is employed to teach lessons to Years 1-7. Also a guest Drama Specialist is funded by the P&C for one term to supplement class activities. The school has adopted a Science activity based program 'Primary Investigations' for Years 1 - 7 which is supplemented with other teaching resources. Languages other than English (LOTE) includes French, which is taught to Years 6 and 7 and Indonesian to Years 3, 4 and 5. The Management of Student Behaviour (MSB) Policy focuses on positive rewards/strategies and also describes a 'consequence system,' a series of scaled punishments used by each class for misbehaviour. Staff display a caring / pastoral role. Students are introduced to a wide range of Physical education/sporting activities and are very competitive in Interschool Carnivals despite being a relatively small school. The structure of the school is a 'U' shape with linear classrooms and standard time tabling arrangements. All classrooms are air-conditioned. The school library is automated and operated by a part time library officer. Each year cohort has access to three or more computers. Students from Years 1 - 7 have exposure to the Internet from their classrooms computers. Collier School, which was built in 1948, had a hall/stage built in 1990. The P & C contributed approximately $30,000 to its construction. In 1995 staff and disabled toilets were built into the present building structure. The following year, 1996, the administration area was extended and updated. An outdoor covered area, housing a full size canteen and sports store was also built. In 1997 an on-site Pre-Primary centre was located at Collier ready for the full time 5 year old program commencement in 1998. Later a second classroom was located on site and a kindergarten program started in 2002. The centre now has excellent grounds and facilities. The parent community is very supportive and actively participates in P & C Meetings, School Council Meetings, school canteen roster, assisting in classrooms / library and special events. Through the School Council, parent representatives play an effective role in the school decision making process. A Student Council also operates within the school with student representatives from Years 3 - 7. In 2008 Collier Primary will celebrate its 60th anniversary. | ||||
