Charthouse Primary School is a major educational facility within the City of Rockingham some 50 km south of the Perth CBD. It is located close to the beaches of Warnbro Sound and serves a population who enjoy the ambiance that this environment generates.

Many of the adults in the school's catchment work in the heavy industries of the Kwinana industrial strip or in smaller industry in the Rockingham area. At the same time a large number of families using the school have one or both parents working for the Defence Forces, particularly the Navy, as the school is within easy access to the major naval facility at Garden Island.

The school commenced operations on the first day of school in 1991 and was officially opened by the Minister for Education, The Hon. Kay Hallahan, on 13th November 1991. The opening enrolments were 54 Pre Primary children (part time) and 459 Primary children.

By late 1995 the school enrolments were 98 full time Pre Primary students and 878 Primary. These were allocated to 30 Primary classes and 4 Pre Primary groups.

Since this point numbers have slowly declined and at the commencement of 2008 enrolments stood at Kindergarten 63, Pre Primary 74 and Primary 555. The half cohort of children who started in 2001 are now in Year Six and this has resulted in the relatively low numbers in this particular group.

The school's physical facilities are comprised of four teaching blocks, one of five classrooms, the others four. On site there are six transportable classrooms and four specifically designed pre primary transportable rooms. There is, in addition, a central services block housing a library, a computing laboratory, an art room and a music room. Administrative facilities are housed in a separate block and there is an extensive under-cover area that also contains a canteen facility. The Indonesian language program is conducted in the senior teaching block.

Most teaching staff at this school have been on its permanent staff for five or more years. Several were members of the original staff appointed to the school in 1991. The Principal, Stephen Yates, has been with the school since 2004 and came to it after a wide range of experience in country and metropolitan schools of West Australia. He is assisted by three Deputy Principals- Don Vidler, Judith Dadson and Neil Lake, each of whom is very experienced in both curriculum and administrative matters.

The school offers an extensive and comprehensive educational program. In addition to regular classes, specialist facilities are provided in Art, Music and Physical Education for all year levels and Indonesian language for years 3 to 7. To cater for special interests there is a choir, a school band and many special sporting groups.

In recent years the school has invested heavily in Information and Communication Technology and boasts a comprehensive program that incorporates the benefit of these facilities.

The school has enjoyed a history of strong scholastic achievement and regularly enters Australia wide or International competitions where strong results are normally achieved.

The school caters for all aspects of pupil development. An emphasis on scholastic achievement is supplemented by a strong physical education program and a well rounded arts program. In addition, children's sense of civic responsibility is given every opportunity to develop and a strong student leadership program is a feature of this school.

Parent participation in the school is encouraged through a School Council and a Parents & Citizen's Association as well as numerous classroom assistance programs. The School Council is the major policy-making vehicle for this school and has representatives from the staff, parents, administration and the P & C. The role of the P & C is to support the school's program by the provision of resourcing and to participate as partners with the school staff in creating a school environment that fosters excellence in every regard. Both groups meet regularly throughout the year.

It is expected that the school population will stabilise in the near future and the previous challenge of catering to a large and rapidly growing population base is no longer present. It is now anticipated that the school will undertake a steady program of upgrading its facilities in order that it continues to provide the best possible educational environment for the community it serves.

In summary, though this is a large school, it is none the less one that has a strong history of educational achievement. The school is very highly regarded by its local community and surveys conducted in recent years show that it enjoys an outstanding ranking with its parent body.
