School Overview
Castletown Primary is one of three Class 5 Primary Schools situated in the seaside town of Esperance. The population of the town is approximately 14,000 people. The town has a port through which agricultural products from the hinterland and iron ore and nickel from the Goldfields are exported. The area supports a variety of agricultural activities, including sheep, cattle and cereal farming. There is also a growing fishing industry. Tourism is a major industry attracting many people throughout the year to the beautiful islands and pristine beaches of the area.

SCHOOL GROUNDS & BUILDING
The school is situated in a suburb 4 kms from the town centre. It was opened in 1966 with 139 children. The grounds are quite extensive, with two grassed ovals providing adequate space for children's play and sporting activities. Three tennis courts (provided by the P&C) situated to the north section of the school are used for tennis lessons
by students. Many trees and shrubs planted years ago serve to beautify the school and give shade and wind protection. The school building is a linear style with verandah on one side for most of the rooms. The library and 4 additional rooms were built to cater for an additional increase of the school population in 1979. The undercovered area was built in 1985. In 1998, four Pre-Primary centres were erected in the area North East of the tennis courts, to cater for our increasing numbers of Pre-Primary students. STUDENTS
The current population is 600 students including 67 Pre-Primary students and 37 Kindergarten children. In addition the Walmsley St Kindergarten ( off site has 28 children attending the centre). There are 362 families in the school. Approximately one quarter of our children are bus children, travelling in from outlying rural hinterland. Seven buses serve the school. .The remainder of the school population is typically urban with children from a diverse range of backgrounds.

Thirty one Aboriginal children are included in the school population at present, however this number alters during the year as families come and go.

An Education Support Unit serves the special needs of our children with disabilities STAFF
The school has had a long tradition of being an excellent school due to the committed and dedicated teachers who have worked at Castletown. The current staffing allocation is 30.89 FTE, including two Deputies and 16 Senior Teachers and one level 3 teacher. Sixteen education assistants work either part time or in full time positions in the Pre-Primary, Junior Primary or Education Support Centre areas assisting teachers. The school has an allocation of 0.4 FTE for an Aboriginal Education Officer. There is a 'hybrid' mix of experienced and young staff, all of whom bring multiple talents to Castletown and share their experience and skills. The demonstrated capacity of the staff to work as a cohesive team provides not only outcome achievements at a high level, but stability and security for all children in the educational environment. The staff are receptive, responsive and proactive to new educational developments, initiatives and practices. PARENTS
Parents of Castletown have traditionally given strong support to the school. Parents assist at many levels including helping children in the classrooms, being on committees such as canteen, uniform, social committee, Book Committee, School Council and P&C. The P&C is very active with fund raising in addition to being involved in educational matters. Thousands of dollars are raised annually to help supply quality educational resources for the school and to improve learning outcomes.
The School Decision Making Group, now the School Council, which commenced in 1986, has contributed significantly to decisions on school development and further enhancement of quality education for our children.

Consultative processes are used between parents and the school through the School Council meetings, to discuss School Improvement Planning and making decisions on school priorities. The school offers a stimulating learning environment, enabling children to maximise their potential in all areas of learning.

Special programmes in the school include music, physical education , L.O.T.E. - French, P.E.A.C.
Sporting programmes include in-term swimming, interschool competitions in athletics and games and faction carnivals.

Camps are offered to the year 6 children, on an annual basis and additionally classes may choose to go on minor camps from time to time.

Special days celebrated include ANZAC Day and W.A. Week and Parents' Open Night. This year 40th Anniversary Celebrations take place on September 22nd.

Information Technology is a high profile learning area in the school. Students are exposed to a variety of learning technologies through a focus on integration to classroom activities.

Over the past three years 9 teachers have been nominated by the
P & C for N.E.I.T.A. awards.

The school values and beliefs mirror the Education Department as per the Plan for Government Schools 2004-2007. A recent parent survey of the school indicates the strong support of parents for Castletown.

Community and school partnerships are bonded, with shared beliefs and values being at the core of success. An example is the Pilot Swimming Project for disabled children , supported and financed by community groups in the district, to enable children from town schools additional access to swimming lessons. Castletown co-ordinates the project.
