| THE NATURE OF THE CATCHMENT AREA AND THE COMMUNITY Cascade Primary School is located 100 kms North West of Esperance set amongst beautiful gum and mallee bushland. The climate throughout the year is mild to moderate, generally comfortable. No fuel or shopping facilities are available within the Cascade town site, however, a community operated Recreation Centre with facilities provides for various social and sporting opportunities. The closest town is south 30km to Munglinup. Cascade Primary School first opened at a site southeast of its current locality in 1974. This school was made up of a series of transportable buildings. After efforts by the local community, the government opted to build a new permanent structure to facilitate 100 children. This site was opened 17th July 1981. Our current enrolment is 29 students so we have lots of space for an individualised teaching program. All students arrive on one of the three school buses from large agricultural operations, namely broad acre wheat and sheep farming. Students enjoy supervised access from one of fourteen stations in the school, (ratio of one computer to each two children). Staff can access either the school's curriculum or administration network from any one of 16 stations, including the Schools shared drive and Information Systems (SIS). Staff are completing Professional Development in system, district and school priority areas including collaboration and moderation tasks in Making Consistent Judgements and First Steps Maths (Measurement) as well as a Speech and Language Project. Enviromental consciousness is an emphasis of our teaching content and we plant and maintain a commemorative plaqued tree for each graduating student as well as cultivating a vegetable garden and participating in Waterwise activities. SCHOOL DECISION-MAKING AND CONSULTATION PROCESS The Level 3 Primary School benefits from significant community support, particularly through the Parents and Citizens Association. Fundraising has been recently directed towards learning and teaching resources such as: - camps - technology - interactive whiteboard - library books - playground toys - weather station - musical instruments Busy-bees are a regular feature in our school. Cascade Primary School has a very active School Council.Teachers attend and are members of all committees.Whilst contributing to the school planning process the school council has also; - Developed a website focussing on the virtues of teaching at Cascade and living in the South East. - Revised the school Behaviour Management and Handbook policy - Improved the longitudinal forward planning/monitoring policy. The school is widely recognised for its supportive community, the exceptional standard of resources and its proximity to the south coast (approximately 40kms). The small schools of our District (Mallee) often combine events to maximize students socialization, including singing and drama performances/incursions,Interschool Athletics, an annual Swimming Camp at Esperance and Bi-annual Yrs 6 & 7 Canberra Camp (2002,2004,2006). Teachers and Principals of these schools collaboratively plan, learn and support each other as a network. Our staff are longer serving teachers who offer continuity and consistency to their peers and our students. Numero championship challenge is used as an Extension program for Area 2 students. SCHOOL MISSION; Our school mission is to achieve the highest standards of learning possible so that students are equipped to deal effectively with the opportunities and challenges they encounter in a changing world. We want our students to be enthusiastic about learning in a safe and supportive learning environment. Our students are encouraged to learn of their civic, social and environmental responsibilities while building their own self acceptance and resilience in a spirit of inclusivity and equality of opportunity. We want motivated, informed, capable and competent teachers and school leaders who feel valued and supported in their work as they maintain the close links that exist between the school and the community to optimise student learning and outcomes.
