| School Ethos Through cooperation and friendship we aim to engage parents and caregivers, students and school staff in best practice teaching and learning. Through these means Carnarvon Primary School endeavours to ensure that our students develop skills, understandings and attitudes relevant to individual needs thereby enabling them to fulfil their potential and contribute to the development of our community. Our School Community Carnarvon is situated on the coast in the Gascoyne Region of Western Australia's northwest 'where the desert meets the sea'. The town of Carnarvon supports an extensive horticultural industry, prawn and snapper fishery, salt works and the region's pastoral industry. Our Students Our students come from a diverse range of backgrounds reflective of the diversity within the Carnarvon community. Approximately 65% of our students are of Aboriginal descent. Staffing Profile The school is staffed by the DET and consists of a principal, 2 deputy principals, 8 classroom teachers, 1 pre-primary teacher and 1 kindergarten teacher. Specialist teaching roles within the school include an AEST teacher, GiR Literacy teacher, PE teacher, Arts teacher, ICT and LOTE teacher. Support staff provide invaluable skills and links between the school and community. These include registrar, school officer, AIEOs, education assistants and library officer. Features of Carnarvon Primary A range of learning experiences are offered to our students as a part of their overall education program and includes PE, music and art. Over the past three years Carnarvon PS has trialed the value of single sex classes within the upper school. This has resulted in improved attendance and achievement levels for students. The school continues to fine tune and look at ways of improving this strategy's effectiveness. A focus at Carnarvon PS has been the development of a comprehensive arts program. This has included the further development of our two school choirs along with the opportunity for students to enhance their skills with a range of musical instruments. These include guitar, drums, keyboard, clarinet and trumpet. Some students have been fortunate enough to work together as a band. All participants are given opportunities to display their skills in the community. The school also has a comprehensive computer network which is available to our students and staff across the school. A major feature of which is the computer lab which has some 23 computers ready for use. The schools involvement in the 100 schools project over the past three years has seen improvements and a modernisation in access and hardware for students and staff alike. A major school initiative was the introduction of a Positive Incentives Program (PIP), which still operates in tandem with the Social Skills program. This has been underpinned by the 'Friendly Kids, Friendly Classrooms' and 'You Can Do It' resources. It has been designed to continually reward students who demonstrate appropriate Social and Academic skills. The school is continually striving to improve the behavioural choices students make. Carnarvon PS has a dedicated and supportive group of parents and caregivers who makeup the P&C, PSPI and School Council groups. These groups provide invaluable support to the school. Over the past two years the school has undergone a transformation with a real focus on improving school grounds and the general appearance of the school. This has also included a change in school colours and uniform after extensive consultation with the school community. The new Carnarvon PS uniform is quite distinctive and is worn with great pride by students. | ||||
