| HISTORICAL Busselton Primary School is the oldest school in Busselton. Since 1960 it has been the equivalent to a Class 5 primary school. In 1967 its size reduced somewhat when West Busselton Primary School opened. In July 1998, the school moved into new premises at its present location at the eastern end of the town and reached a size of around 670 students. The old site on Prince Street has now become a shopping centre. In 2002 a new school, Geographe Primary School, opened in the Kingsford area, reducing the student population of Busselton PS by approximately 120 students. It has since reduced in size to around 380 students.STUDENT CATCHMENT The school draws students from a range of areas and socio-economic backgrounds. Some students reside in predominately Government Housing estates; others in more modern, recently-developed estates such as Port Geographe. The catchment area includes much of the original parts of Busselton, including the town centre east of Queen Street. In addition, approximately 50 students reside in rural areas and utilise school buses to and from school.BUILDINGS The main school buildings are of modern brick design, with steel rooves. There are four main classroom blocks, plus a library/staffroom block, and an administration building at the front of the school. In addition, there are 2 transportable classroom buildings to accommodate the number of students. The school has an undercover area which includes a canteen.GROUNDS The grounds are well-established, with a good grassed oval of primary school size. Grounds and gardens are all fully reticulated. Extra grassed playing space was added in 2000 by the government to alleviate the problem of lack of play area, due to the combination of large numbers of students and transportable buildings reducing space in the playgrounds. The school is surrounded on two sides by a strip of natural bush and peppermint trees, which is home to a colony of possums. The P&C has installed covered walkways between blocks, and a fence around the front of the school, to enhance safety for students. Additional playground equipment has been installed by the P&C since the school site opened.STAFF The teaching staff tends to be quite stable, with little or no turnover from year to year. Many teachers stay at the school for a number of years, as Busselton offers an attractive lifestyle, and commitment to the school is high. There is usually a lot of teachers seeking to transfer to the school, but openings are limited, as is the case with all schools in the Busselton area. Two-thirds of the teaching staff work part-time or in job-share arrangements. Approximately 10 non-teaching staff are employed at the school, including special needs assistants.PARENT INVOLVEMENT The school has a very supportive Parents and Citizens Association which aims to enhance the learning conditions and opportunities for students. The School Council is a body of 11 people, and provides direction and advice for the school's planning and operations.MAJOR DIFFICULTIES - Wide-ranging ability levels of students, - the school has the lowest socio- economic index in the Busselton area - Increased transiency of students in recent years. | ||||
