| (As at first semester 2006) BULL CREEK PRIMARY SCHOOL SUBURB DEMOGRAPHICS Bull Creek is a residential suburb initially established in the early 1970's with the school being opened in 1975. The majority of the population has middle income and upper middle income, white and blue collar occupations drawn from business houses, small business operators, public service, teachers, nurses, accountants, lecturers, private contractors, self employed trades people and trades persons. Bull Creek is currently going through a rejuvination with younger families moving into the area as older residents retire to alternative accommodation.There are several aged people's and retirement homes within the area. This has had a positive effect on school enrolments numbers as they are currently 285 students from kindergarten to year 7. PHYSICAL RESOURCES Three open area cluster units with 6 teaching areas in each. Library Resource Centre. Pre Primary Centre (2 units) Music/Stage room Facilities room - instrumental music, indoor class activities, after hours community activities Playing areas - 3 netball courts, school oval and John Creaney Oval are adequate for student needs. LOCATION Bull Creek's easy access to central Perth, Fremantle and eastern suburbs, together with the enhanced reputation of its local high schools makes Bull Creek a desirable residential area. Bull Creek is close to both Curtin and Murdoch universities. COMMUNITY USE OF SCHOOL RESOURCES Facilities Room - Martial arts, Dance, Drama, Church group Undercover Area- Tai Chi ORGANISATION Principal and one Deputy. Three learning and teaching teams K-3, 3/4, 5/6/7. These teams plan and teach in a collaborative framework. There are 11 classes including two K/P classes. Staff work collaboratively on an outcomes focussed educational plan. The school has a music specialist who teaches music across the school. Instrumental lessons are provided to selected students from years 3-7 in violin, cello, wind and guitar. LOTE (German)is taught in Years 1-7. Physical education is provided by a specialist teacher to all students in years 1-7 English as a Second Language is supported through a 0.5 ESL teacher and assistant being employed at the school to assist non English speaking students and families. TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS OFFICE The school has a fully integrated and networked computer system which operates the Schools Information System (SIS). All Students and staff have access to the Internet and email. A computer laboratory and classroom computer stations ensure students have the opportunity to use ICT as a tool to improve their learning. LIBRARY Information computer system is installed. A bank of networked PC's are Internet linked for student use. The Deputy takes ICT support classes each week to maximise teaching and learning opportunities. SCHOOL DECISION-MAKING AND CONSULTATION PROCESS Regular Staff Meetings, School Council Meetings, Finance Committee meetings are held to manage school accountability and management issues. The school has a strong P & C which is very active supporting the educational directions of the school. STUDENT COMMITTEES Year 7 school prefects (8 students) THE STAFF BACKGROUND The school is well served by a staff which is highly experienced, competent and professional. There is not a high staff turnover at Bull Creek. The staff's maturity, qualifications and experience have enabled a professional ethos to develop whereby teachers readily accept responsibility for student development, classroom initiatives and curriculum development. NON TEACHING STAFF Registrar (F/T), School Officer (0.6), Library Assistant(0.4), Gardener (0.6), Two K/P Program Teacher Assistants, Year 1/2 Teacher Assistant and two Teacher Assistants for students with special needs. THE PUPILS FAMILY BACKGROUND In general the school population can be described as multi-cultural, although it is predominantly Australian/European. Some students were born in countries where English is not the native language. A small number of students belong to families where English is not spoken at home. Children with a non-English speaking background assimilate readily into the school. Parents of these students place a high value on education, family support and traditions. Respect for other cultures and respect for all school community members is an important part of the values and beliefs held at Bull Creek PS. ATTENDANCE There are very high attendance levels at the school. ATTITUDE TO SCHOOL Students and parents value education very highly and parents have high expectations of their students and of the school's educational programs. GENERAL PERFORMANCE LEVELS Western Australian Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (WALNA) Test results in Years 3, 5 and 7 indicate students are performing well above the state average and above expected levels for like schools. STUDENT PARTICIPATION The school operates a Prefect System. These students perform a range of routine school duties and provide student leadership and a conduit for student opinion. Classes are rostered for regular assembly items and prefects are responsible for the overall organization and operation of assemblies. Cooperative learning in classes fosters student decision making and participation in their learning programs. THE PARENTS BACKGROUND Migrancy: 24a0of parents, representing 20 non English speaking nationalities, were born outside Australia. Employment, approximately 3a0of female parents and 56a0of male parent are sole income earners. 41a0of families have both parents working. COMMUNICATION A fortnightly newsletter includes school information and parent/community notices. A School Information Brochure is available to parents. Whole School assemblies are held regularly. Reports to parents about student progress include a written report as well as a portfolio of student work samples. Class teacher/parent meetings. End of year afternoon tea for parent helpers. Parent Information Evenings communicate Curriculum Initiatives. New Parent Information evenings. Parents are encouraged to help in classes. Teachers are available for parent interviews by appointment. The school values parent comment and encourages parent participation. PARENT INVOLVEMENT Parents and P&C members volunteer for library, canteen, busy bees, class room help, assistance with excursions, sports carnivals, music and craft activities. Direct P&C involvement and support includes fundraising, uniform, canteen, management of school's facilities room and grounds development. Parents expect children to be well mannered and well behaved and are keen to be involved in decision making which impacts on them and their children. They are well informed, expect a high level of educational achievement and are very supportive of the school. FREMANTLE LANGUAGE CENTRE The school has three language development classes. These are a satellite of the Fremantle Language Development Centre. Whilst the children are not enrolled at this school, they do participate in all school activities and wear the school uniform. PEAC The Fremantle District PEAC Centre is situated on site. This is a direct benefit to the school as PEAC staff provide support to Bull Creek staff for gifted and talented children who are not part of the District PEAC Program. | ||||
